From the College Captains

We’re off to an exciting start in 2023 - there’s already various whole school events taking place for students across a range of interests! At the top of the list, for the first time in three years, GEC has confirmed to run their annual school production for students with a passion for singing, dancing and acting, with this year’s musical being Matilda! It is safe to say that many students are excited upon hearing the news and already had various meetings about it.

With that being said, in terms of sports, the GEC cross country carnival will be on the last day of Term 1. My favourite part? Students are able to dress in their house colours!

The sports scene at GEC started off with a bang, with the annual swimming carnival being held on 1st February, the third day of school! With the day’s end, it was Topaz house that claimed the coveted house swimming shield. Personally, I really enjoyed the novelty events and the free swim in the warm, shallow pool. These gave the opportunity for people who did not want to race a chance to still have fun in the water.

Senior school interschool sports was shortly after the swimming carnival. This term, we had teams compete in volleyball, lawn bowls and tennis. Congratulations to Ishaan, Jack and Lee who absolutely smashed lawn bowls and are going to the next round. Everyone did their best and had an amazing time, but the best part of my day was definitely the lunch we got after.

One sporting event I'm really excited for is the whole-school lunch time volleyball tournament that is expected to start in the next few weeks. There's nothing like a bit of friendly competition to keep you entertained during lunch! There will be a juniors tournament for years 7-9, and a seniors for 10-12. This is an official house tournament, with each individual in a winning team each round being awarded house points.

Over the next year at Glen Eira, we look to encourage student participation on and off the field. We’ve already spoken about sporting opportunities, but we have so much more on offer for students. I recommend starting the day with a nutritious breakfast provided by Ms Lawson at Breakfast Club, run from 8am-8:30am every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. During lunch and recess, we have clubs to suit a wide range of interests, including but not limited to robotics, radio club and crochet club. Included below is a list of clubs, so we hope to see some new faces.

  • Breakfast
  • Crochet
  • Rainbow retreat
  • Radio
  • Robotic

Year 12 may be stressful, but wow have we had an exciting start already, and of course we’ve got some highly anticipated events coming up very soon! So far, the Year 12’s have made a home out of the VCE Study Centre with their incredible photo wall, showing images from the past swimming carnival along with a lovely display of their baby photos, how cute!

But how about our new classes? Well they too have been a lot of fun so far; in Psychology, students were able to simulate the process of neural transmission with bubbles and sparklers and in Chemistry students made biodiesel, and it's only been three weeks! These kinds of experiments and excursions continue to make class interactive and fun.

However, one of the most important Year 12 events is coming up in less than a month, something that has been long awaited and highly anticipated - the 2023 Year 12 Formal! The Executive team has been working tirelessly to make this night special for every student, and I’m sure it’ll be absolutely magical, definitely a night to remember!
