Learning and Teaching

Week 7, 2023

In Year 5 and Year 6, we are striving to enhance and improve the writing skills of our students.  One of the ways we are doing this is through an approach called VCOP which stands for Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation.

Oral Language is an essential component of VCOP and Big Write with the premise that students need to be able to say something before they will be able to produce it in written form.  For students to be able to successfully write about a topic, they need to be able to talk about it and therefore oral language is important.

The aim of a Big Write is for students to be able to start and finish a piece of writing, within about an hour, showcasing the skills they have learnt during the previous few weeks in class.  We will be having out first Big Write for 2023 next week.

Here's where you come in!

An important component of Big Write is Home Talk.  Students have been shown the writing prompt STUCK and it can also been seen on the Year 5 and Year 6 level page, or below. We would love students and families to have a chat about the prompt to help get some ideas flowing in readiness for the Big Write. Your child does not have to write anything at home as part of this, it can all be done orally and may only take a couple of minutes.  The chat will help improve the writing.

We can't wait to see what ideas students come up with around the idea of STUCK.

Thanks for your support.
