Science Talent Search

2023 Science Talent Search

As a part of Bimbadeen Heights Primary School’s Student Excellence and Enrichment Program, we are supporting and encouraging students to enter this year’s Science Talent Search.

The Science Talent Search (STS) was founded in 1952, making it one of the longest running programs of its type in the world!

STS has three broad aims:

1. To stimulate an ongoing interest in the study of sciences by:

• encouraging independent self-motivated project work amongst students of science;

• giving students the opportunity to communicate their achievements to a wider audience;

• according recognition of effort and achievement in a scientific enterprise.

2. To promote the direct involvement of the students in the processes of science and its communication.

3. To give the public at large an opportunity to see the quality of work being achieved in science, by both primary and post primary students.

Why STS?

To encourage students to develop a broader understanding and application of science and technology which is fundamental to sound social and personal judgement, now and in the future.

Science Talent Search is for everybody: for those planning a career in one of the sciences or technological disciplines, for those interested in scientific hobbies, or for those concerned enough to present a point of view about science through the medium of poster, essay, video, photography, games or computer programs.

We believe that personal expression of interest and concern through independently executed, open project work is an essential ingredient in the appreciation and understanding of science.

We believe that through STS we are developing in students, skills and attitudes which will contribute to the well being and development of the wider community in which they will live and work.

What is the Science Talent Search?

The Science Talent Search is a competition where students can either work independently, or with a partner to develop a science project (that will be completed at home) and present it to a panel of judges.

This year’s topic is ‘Innovations: Powering Future Industries,’ and students from all year levels (F-6) are invited to take part.

PLEASE NOTE: PROJECTS ARE TO BE COMPLETED AT HOME – THERE WILL NOT BE TIME GIVEN AT SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS TO WORK ON THEIR PROJECTS.

Students do not need to be limited to working with a partner from their year level, and in the past, siblings have worked together over the development of their project.

Please note that the cost of project entry will be paid for by the school under the Student Excellence and Enrichment Program – there will be no cost to families.

Please find the information handbook – which explains the criteria for all of the categories – and an expression of interest form.

All students who are considering entering the Science Talent Search will need to have this expression of interest form completed and returned to Mr Baroni by Friday 31 March – and then have all projects completed and brought into school by Friday 14 July 2023.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Alec Baroni alec.baroni@education.vic.gov.au
