Living in Harmony (#everyonebelongs)

One of my highlights for the term as a new member of the Good News Lutheran College family has been watching the way students in the Senior Years have been excited about and embraced Harmony Week. Apart from the school-wide enthusiasm to dress in cultural attire, Senior Years students have been eager to build a culture of belonging through their willingness to share with the school community their own unique identity in the form of singing and dancing. From Polynesian dances, Indian songs, Bollywood dancing, and Filipino harana, students from all year levels were able to find a sense of belonging and create a community of friendship, understanding, and unity during Harmony Week performances led by students of the Senior Years.

Several Year 12 students were asked to reflect on what “belonging” means to them. Here is what they had to say:

Everyone belongs at our school because …

  • We are special and can feel safe in this community
  • We are one big family bonded by love and unity
  • We are an inclusive community that promotes positivity
  • We are all God’s children
  • We support each other in our hardship
  • We change each other for the better
  • We learn to respect others and their culture
  • We stand on God’s land as his children
  • We are equal
  • We are a kind and caring community that believe strongly in unity
  • We are a community that embraces differences and champions our various strengths

One thing I’ve come to experience very quickly in my short time at Good News Lutheran College is that everyone does belong in this community. In the Senior Years, we aim to foster this feeling of belonging through the knowledge that our creator, God, loves each and everyone of us in equal measure.
