Food Technology

At Mackellar Primary School we use Design Technologies, Food Studies and Nutrition in our Food Technology classes using the Victorian curriculum. The Food Studies and Nutrition part of our learning is to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills so that students can become critical learners and producers of healthy foods, understand where it comes from and how to prepare it.  This year our crops of vegetables were not as good as the last 2 years, but we were able to use them in our cooking sessions.

In terms 1 and 2, students are learning skills to ensure that students can create products creatively and safely manipulating with a range of materials, tools, and equipment to further develop the knowledge, understanding from last year.

Senior students in years 4 – 6 investigate the five food groups and apply their knowledge to make healthy choices and comment on their choices.  Junior students will continue with their lunch box, snacks, and healthier takeaway food choices.

During our sessions, senior students will have the opportunity to use the food processor, blender, and mixer. The junior classes will have the opportunity to showcase their understanding and skills with an emphasis on presentation and recording their recipes and feedback using the iPad.

All students are required to have Book Creator app on their iPad, as well as have access to SHOWBIE to present their work in panels in their book creators on their iPads. They need to upload their work regularly to demonstrate their learning and record their understanding and personal interest. Senior students are encouraged to critique their products and suggest ways of improving the finished result.
