Term 1 Week 8 2022 - Friday 24th March
What have we been up to?
Can you believe we are already nearing the end of Term 1! It has been another busy couple of weeks in 1/2.
The last two weeks students have been continuing with the Little Learners Love Literacy Program. All the students have really settled into the routine and have loved meeting their character each week and learning the sound each letter makes. Week 7 saw all groups focus on Heart Words. These are words that the students cannot sound out and have to learn by heart. For example, in ‘my’ the ‘y’ is the part they need to learn off by heart. In ‘the’ ‘e’ needs to be learnt by heart, as they cannot be sounded out. Week 8 saw the introduction of Tim Turtle (Yellow Group), Gabby Goat (Red Group) and the FLOSS Rule (Blue Group). The floss rule is used to remind students that double consonants like ss, ll and ff can only be found at the end of words.
.
In Reading, students have loved looking at non-fiction texts and are beginning to confidently explain their defining features. In Writing, students have begun exploring information reports and their structures. They are very keen to have a go at writing their own. The students are really enjoying learning about place value in Maths. They have enjoyed representing tens and ones using unifix blocks and interactive base-10 blocks.
They have also been enjoying learning new signs in AUSLAN. The past couple of weeks the students have learnt the signs for people in their school and farm animals. During Week 8, students met with their 3/4 buddies and began designing a 7 Habits game they will eventually make and share with the school.

Reading
Over the next fortnight the 1/2 students will continue to develop their understanding and knowledge of non-fiction texts by looking at a variety of information reports and non-fiction books. They will ask questions before, during and after reading and begin to summarise and synthesise information they read.
Writing
Throughout the next two weeks in Writing students will explore the language features of Information Reports and write a joint information report as a class using their developing knowledge.
Maths
Students will continue learning about place value. They will be focusing on two-digit numbers and moving towards three-digit numbers. They will investigate the place value of hundreds, tens and ones using MAB, Unifix and Place Value Charts.
Inquiry & Science
In the coming two weeks, students will share the bugs they found in their own backyards and reflect on their progress with their Personal and Academic WIGs.
