Visual Arts

Over the last two weeks in Visual Arts, students only had one lesson due to public holiday and curriculum day. All students continued to work on the art elements of line, shape and colour. Our Foundation students completed their line flowers from last week by painting them with watercolour paints. Year 1/2 students followed step by step instructions on how to draw a chicken, students then drew different types of lines within the sections of the chicken to create the zentangle effect, using lines, shapes, and patterns. Year 3/4 students completed their abstract drawings Our year 5/6 students started to explore the artist, Jen Stark and her ‘dripping effect’ where she is known for lots of colour, illusion and a psychedelic effect.

Culture Studies

This week in culture studies, students continued to learn about Italy. Foundation students learnt to say the colours in Italian. Years 1 to 6 began to learn about Venice, ‘The floating city’ and how they celebrate their Carnevale where they wear a venetian mask, so people can hide their identity, everyone is able to be equal and free during the carnival. Students were able to plan and design their own venetian mask, then they were able to start to make and create their mask out of cardboard, used watercolour paints and materials such as, feathers, pom poms, ribbon, sequins, glitter, and pipe cleaners.

PE and Health

Over the last two weeks of Health we have been exploring peoples Personal Character Strengths. We have had great discussions about each others character strengths and how this allows you to achieve good things, and we spoken about how your character strengths helps you and other people to be their best. We have discussed the difference between talents and character strengths and highlighted that talents are developed through your character strengths. For instance, if you are a talented sportsperson or musician, you would most likely have strong determination and hard work to get better at these things.

It was highlighted that we can develop our character strengths so that they can improve and we can achieve better results. For example, developing ones self control so that students don’t talk over others, and can focus on the instructions in class.

With the start of the AFL season last week, we had a fun footy lesson, learning the skills of footy, as well as having some fun games. This week in grade 3-6, students moved on from teeball and had a chance to learn the skills of softball. Softball is just a variation of teeball, using a bigger ball and having the ball underarmed to the batsmen instead of off the tee. This is a bit more challenging, but allows our students to develop their skills for interschool sports in term 2 for our grade 4-6 students.

The prep classes have been focusing on developing their hand eye coordination through catching and throwing large balls and medium sized balls, moving onto smaller balls. They have also been rolling and kicking balls to each other and developing accuracy and effective techniques.

Interschool Sports

Teeball – Round 5 and 6

In round 5 of our interschool sports competition we played Kingston Heath. Again it was great to see all of our students synergising so well together and using great sportsmanship during their games.

The boys tried really hard, but came up against a very good batting team and we lost 21-11. The girls continued on their winning ways with a hard fought victory. They came from behind in the last innings to score 7 runs and win 14-12. They have developed a great team spirit within the team.

Round 6 saw us catching a bus for our first game away from Le Page Park, and all of the students were extremely excited. With so many students in our 5-6 classes we usually have 3 games but we could only organise 2 games. This meant that all the students had to work together and be patient, and they all did a great job supporting each other. The highlight from the boys was Bentleigh’s hitting as he hit two massive shots and got two home runs. The boys tried hard but lost 26-15.

The girls again had to manage a bigger side than usual, but had another impressive win, winning 16-5. Everyone had a great time and are really enjoying the challenge of interschool sports.

We have our Lightning Premiership coming up on Friday 31st March.

House Cross Country

What a glorious day we had for our house cross country on Wednesday. It wasn’t too hot, but not cold and wet either. All students did an amazing job trying really hard throughout their events and running their best. It was great to see so many parents coming along and support their child and the school.  We started with a lap of the oval for the Preps and grade 1s, before stepping up a little with 2 laps for the grade 2s and then to a 2km and 3km run for the older students in grades 3-6.

From these events, a team of students will be invited to represent Le Page at the Kingston Division competition which will be held early in term 2.

A special mention to Miss Lowry and Mr B. for their efforts in running a number of km’s throughout the day to support our students.

Thankyou to all our wonderful staff for helping out and making this a great event.

Well done for everyone who did their best and congratulations to all those students who received a ribbon for finishing in the top 3. However, I must give special mention to Luke Measham for an amazing effort throughout the day. He won his own individual u 9/10 race and then ran in the u 11/12 race and came a very close second in this race and then continued running and ended up running 7 or 8 laps, which was the equivalent of 7-8km. Well done Luke.

Student Vs. Teachers Lunch Time Games

Grade 1/2 Vs. the Teachers

Last week the teachers played the Grades 1/2s in a modified and varied game of dodgeball. It was more a game like poison ball due to the large number of students but fun was had by all. I often get asked by many students at the end of the game ‘who won?’, but I always respond by saying ‘did you have fun?’ which they all reply with a yes, so I tell them that everyone won.

It is a great event that the whole school enjoys being involved in and watching and the teachers really enjoy the interaction with the students.

Our next game will be the Preps taking on the teachers in a game of ‘clean the yard’

Thanks Mr Bradley
