Learning & Teaching

Leader: Stephanie Hayes

Essential Assessment is a program used by teachers to provide Numeracy and Literacy assessment. It delivers a whole school approach to summative and formative assessment. Summative assessment meaning the assessment that is completed at the end of the unit. While formative assessment is used to monitor student learning.

At St Patrick’s Primary School we use Essential Assessment for Numeracy. Students complete a pre-test before being taught the unit. This allows the classroom teacher to see what the student understands and any misconceptions that they might have. Teachers use a feature called ‘My Numeracy’ to assist with formative assessment (monitoring what the student has learnt). Then finally students complete what is called a post-test at the end of each unit. This being the summative assessment, showing what the student has learnt and is able to do independently.
