Learning & Teaching News

As we approach the end of term it is good to know that the exciting learning opportunities for our students do not ease off at all.  Here are just some of the events undertaken by students recently.

Year 8 Japanese Cooking Incursion

(by Marishka Aldon, 8D)

In the year 8 Japanese classes we have been learning the food unit, so on Monday 27th of March we had a cooking incursion. We were able to learn how to cook three Japanese dishes: Onigiri (riceball), Yakisoba (stir fry noodles) and Okonomiyaki (savoury pancake). First, we had a demonstration on how to cook the foods and then we were able to work together in our groups and make the three dishes. At the end of the lesson, we tried the foods that we made, and I thought it tasted delicious. I had lots of fun when we were cooking, and I am sure that everyone did too. I am also glad that I know how to make three new dishes.

SIS Big Night

On Tuesday, 28 March 2023, four of our VET Music students performed at the Drum Theatre, Dandenong as part of the Southern Independent Schools Big Night, a showcase for the schools’ performing arts students.  Mr Andrew Church organised the St. Peter’s College band comprising Chanelle Narcis (Clyde North) vocals, Bailey Dodd (Cranbourne) on guitar, Dylan Bird (Clyde North) on bass guitar and Alex Durbin (Clyde North) on drums. They performed the 1980s hit “Waterfalls” by TLC and were very impressive.  Thanks to Ms Nicole Lewis, our Performing Arts Leader, who organised the schools involvement.  Also to Mr Patawaran and Mr Church for supporting the students.

VCE Tutoring & Study Support

Perhaps not as exciting as Japanese cooking or music performances, but of high value in improving student learning outcomes is our VCE tutoring program and study support. Some of what has been on offer this term has included:

  • TSSM small group online tutoring sessions in the following VCE subjects: Business Management, Biology, Chemistry, Accounting, Maths Methods, Physics, General Maths, Psychology and Legal Studies.
  • Monash Virtual School
  • VCE Maths tutoring after school on Monday and Wednesday
  • Edrolo Training Session to assist student to engage with this learning platform.
  • Year 12 Elevate Education Evening
  • Study skills session with the College’s teacher librarian Ms Sendeckyj.

The Year 12 Wednesday and Friday (Week 2) afternoon study periods have been well utilised by the school for running School Assessed Coursework, however, we have also used this time to supplement and enhance the study skills and learning of our Year 12 students. Unfortunately, these sessions on offer have not always been well attended by students and I would ask parents to encourage your children to take the opportunities offered to them so that they improve and extend their learning.

I wish you all a safe and happy Easter season.  May the new life offered by the Risen Christ be experienced by you all.
