Senior Debating
Senior debating has been busy over Terms 2 and 3 completing rounds 2-5 of the Debating Association of Victoria (DAV). Year 8, 9 and 10 Debaters Wilhelm Layton, Phoebe Cleveland, Tayla Atyeo-Peters, Lenna Scholtmeyer, Kadence Rawson, Emma Miller, Christian Chirgwin, Aoife O’Connell, Audrey Vernon and Olivia Van Helsdingen have all participated in competition debating.
Most recently Mary MacKillop Catholic Regional College completed against Chairo Christian College in the local Rotary debate held at the Leongatha Golf Club on Monday, September 5th. William Layton, Phoebe Cleveland, Tayla Ateo-Peters led our debating team and were the affirmative side to argue ‘That playing competitive sport does more harm than good for primary school students.’ The debate was open to the public and a crowded club room created an exciting environment that did justice to a very tough debating battle that lasted just over half an hour. The guest judges were forced to deliberate for longer than usual and unsurprisingly there was only one point between the two teams on the night. Unfortunately, this year we did not get through to challenge the previous victors from 2019, pre-COVID winners Leongatha Secondary College. We look forward to next year’s Challenge!

Junior Strike League Cricket - Darwin
In the mid-year school holidays, Harry Hoekstra (10B) and I flew up to sunny Darwin, to play cricket in the Junior Strike League, for Victoria Pride, against fellow states. Both in Darwin for a week, we played both 50-over and 20-over games, during the day and under lights.
While neither team won overall, it was a great experience to extend our cricket and play on the beautiful grounds across Darwin. Along with this, on rest days we got the opportunity to explore the territory, through cultural tours, visiting Litchfield National Park, and going to Mindil Market, making for a very memorable trip.

Tournament of the Minds
Tournament of Minds finished up on Sunday 10th September with 10 eager students and three staff leaving for the State Final at La Trobe University in Bundoora. This followed a successful regional final at Churchill. On the day each team completed a three-hour challenge related to their theme and a short spontaneous challenge. We were unlucky not to receive a win or an honourable mention. Despite this, the students enjoyed the day and represented the college well, gaining a lot from the experience.
