Kitchen Garden
The delightful and fun filled year 2 students spent their time in the kitchen this week focusing on the country Canada as part of their inquiry unit on the Commonwealth Games. They gained new information about the symbol on the Canadian flag - the maple leaf, coming from the maple tree. This delicious new fact inspired our recipe of Maple Syrup Cup Cakes, decorated with an edible flower of viola or marigold. It then made sense to pot seedlings of marigolds and viola into sustainable newspaper pots created by the students. These will either be planted in the garden as the newspaper is biodegradable, or they can be repotted with extra potting mix. They will of course need a good water. Please enjoy they gorgeous photos:
Year 4 Stewardship Program
As a continuation of their learning about the local waterways guided by Melbourne Water, the year 4 stewards are hosting a guest speaker from The Arthur Rylah Institute who will present information about eels in the Dandenong Creek. This will occur in the last week of the term. This short film touches on their amazing lifecycle, what the eels meant to our indigenous nations, and how urbanisation is affecting them.

Year 6 Sustainability Leaders
Our Sustainability Leaders participated in an online summit called GoGreen involving primary and secondary schools around Australia. They listened to the stories of other schools and their journey to living and learning more sustainably. It is always inspiring finding out what other schools are doing whilst confirming our own sustainable practices. It has inspired the leaders to use their lunchtimes on Tuesdays and Thursdays to making recycled crafts and planting in preparation for our stall at the upcoming Fair on the Hill.
We also aim to conduct an audit of our waste practices, namely the landfill waste. Our goal is to see if we can reduce the amount of plastic bags required to fill the landfill bins in each classroom each day. This would mean ensuring all waste is disposed of correctly and sustainably. Our year 6 leaders will have more to say about after the Fair on the Hill.
Spring has sprung!!
What a delightful time of year - there is evidence all around that Spring has sprung! It is a great opportunity to observe with your children the sights, sound and smells of Spring in the air and perhaps the changing mood we feel as the days begin to feel longer and lighter. May I also draw your attention to the live feed on youtube of the Peregrine Falcons that have nested atop a building in Collins St in the city. You will find their live feed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=on3V22m60uQ. Currently it looks like three eggs have been laid and it will take until early October before we see them hatch.
