Killara Academy

Last weekend some parents stopped me on Mona Vale Road to thank me (and Mr Chand) for taking their daughter to the University of New South Wales the previous Saturday. At UNSW the 100 students learnt about the courses on offer and the different campuses where they can study as well as many of the possibilities for studying outside of Australia. The range of scholarships was also explored. The students were astonished at the variety of the faculties and subjects available as well as all the facilities even sleeping pods at the library.

This was followed by a tour of many of the different areas within the university with the most amazing being the quantum computer with its cryochamber close to absolute zero temperature, -273 degrees Celsius. The students enjoyed the biology department with all its specimens and the ‘unbreakable’ clock. It was great to see the university students making their own designed cars as well as the special solar car.

The growth mindset that Killara Academy aims to develop was in evidence that day. The students were excited at the prospect of being there after they finished high school.

Back at school, Killara Academy is meeting early every Tuesday morning with our latest topic in Big History being how life developed on Earth and how early humans evolved – such thrilling ideas to explore.
