Information for Year 10 students

There are a lot of things happening for Year 10s this semester.

Best Practice Interviews occurred in the last week of term 1.

It was terrific to see how well students presented themselves for their interview. Although quite a number of students were nervous about their interview, they rose to the challenge and overcame their anxiety. Many were told on the day that they were either short listed or were offered the position. Students will receive written feedback this week during tutorials. We ask students to come and see us in the Careers Room if they have any concerns about their feedback or would like pointers about how they might improve for next time.

A huge thank you must go out to all of the members of our community who supported this event by donating their time to participate on a panel. Our Best Practice Interview program relies heavily on the experience of others who work in our community to make the event successful and meaningful to our students. Feedback from a number of students who participated was that they were very appreciative of the opportunity and learnt a great deal about what is required to apply for a position and to present well for an interview.

Work Experience week is coming up on 18th- 23rd June

Students were given work experience forms late last term. If students were absent or have misplaced their form, they can come to the Careers Room to collect another one. Students are required to return their forms by Monday 30th April – ONLY TWO WEEKS AWAY. After this date there will be a short period where late forms may still be accepted, however we require forms to be returned ASAP in order to complete additional administration tasks and to ensure students have completed appropriate safe at work testing before they go out to work.

We really urge students to find a placement that is related to a career they may want to pursue when they leave school rather than just finding a retail placement. This is a real opportunity for students to explore whether their intended career path is what they really want to do. For students who are struggling to find something, consider the following pointers:

  • Talk to your friends and let them know what you’re interested in – they may know someone they can put you in touch with;
  • Talk to your extended family – grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins – once again they may know someone. If it’s located near where they live, you could perhaps consider staying with them for the week;
  • Speak to neighbours, your sport coach, other teachers;
  • Where possible, asking in person is a better option – it’s harder to say know to someone who is in front of you. It also gives them the chance to see what you are like; and,
  • Don’t be put off if employers say no to you. There are many reasons why they may not be able to take you on and this will not have anything to do with you personally e.g. not enough work, they already have work experience students, it’s not an appropriate environment to have work experience students.

Please note, if students find a placement which requires them to travel with their employer or have accommodation with their employer because they are located too far from home, an additional form must also be completed and signed by parents and the employer. This is attached to the Work Experience form.

Please check that all parts of the forms are completed thoroughly as they must be filled in and signed by students, parents and the employer before being returned to the Careers Room where it will be checked and then signed off by the Principal.

Year 10-12 students are asked to please log on to Compass and complete their Career Action Plan (CAP) for 2018. The information students provide will assist us in Pathways to provide more directed information. From the data we receive, we will be able to organise guest speakers who can come out to the school to speak to relevant interested students. It also prompts students to set goals with timelines as well as get themselves prepared for their post-secondary options. Please help us to help you by completing all aspects of your Career Action Plan. It also points you to other resources you can use if you’re uncertain of what your interests are. The Plan can be completed at home or at school. Parents/Carers can also assist in this process by speaking to students about getting this important information completed. Students who need assistance are encouraged to come into the Careers Room at lunchtime.
