Term 2
We have concluded another semester at Blackburn High School after a busy Term 2 filled with many school events. I would like to acknowledge the incredible work of our mentor teachers who have been the first port of call for students and parents and who have been consistent in their delivery of the mentor program. At the start of Term 2, we welcomed Samara Copley to the Freeman House as the new F6 mentor teacher and acknowledged the work of Stephen McDonald during Term 1.
At the conclusion of Term 1, we held the Freeman Fundraiser which raises awareness and much needed funds for the Community Spirit Foundation. The Freeman Student Leaders were excellent in their organisation and delivery of the fundraiser and we managed to raise over $2500 for the foundation. On the final day of term, we made our way down to the Nunawading Athletics Track for the annual Athletics Carnival against the other Houses. The student participation was high, and we managed to secure second spot for the day, placing us in first place overall for the House competition as we have been the consistent house in all whole-school events.
Our Year 7’s and 8’s enjoyed a few days away from the classroom as they attend Camp Toolangi (year 7) and the Lake Dewar (Year 8). I would like to acknowledge our junior students on their behaviour while on the camp and to the staff that attended the camps. It has been great to see so many Freeman House students participating in a range of extra-curricular events including year 7, 8 and the Duke of Edinburgh camp, the mid-year music concert, inter-school sport, cross country carnival and house fundraisers.
On behalf of the Freeman staff, we hope you have a lovely Term 2 break and look forward to kicking Term 3 off in style on Monday the 10th of July.
Last term we had our Freeman Fundraiser which was a huge success! We had a barbeque which included sausages and veggie burgers, and soft drinks for sale. We also had an option to purchase fairy floss which was a great hit with everyone wanting more! All proceeds raised from the day go towards the Community Spirit Foundation (previously named the Cathy Freeman Foundation.) The money raised will help to support kids in Aboriginal communities to go to school and help them to have access to opportunities that they previously might not have had. It was a great day overall with many students participating in our dress up as your favourite athlete theme, seeing lots of jerseys supporting different teams and sports. Overall, the day was a great success for the school community.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Lake Dewar this year. There was a wide range of activities that were engaging for everyone. Some activates we did were mountain biking, kayaking and paddle boarding. Although, I particularly enjoyed the Gorge walk, flying fox and adventure tunnelling. The Werribee Gorge track included a beautiful hike from the crest of a hill that winded down to a serene lake below. Just above this track was a 250m flying fox that had a breathtaking view of scenery. The adventure tunnelling was quite different to the other activities, it involved working together as a team to go through an escape like room with lots of fun obstacles to overcome. Overall, it was a great experience, the cabins were spacious and cosy, there was a substantial amount of free time, and it was a great bonding opportunity with my school mates.
