Curriculum Matters

Foundation

The Foundation Staff and Students want to send a HUGE THANK YOU to the Parents Association for their generous grant for our Fine Motor Program last term.

Fine motor skills are an important part of the education program we deliver in Foundation. Fine motor skills refer to the smaller movements made by our hands including our fingers and their muscle development. These skills allow our students to develop the strength in their fingers and hands so that they are able to demonstrate aspects of self-care including brushing teeth, tying shoe laces, feeding themselves (use of utensils) and most importantly for education – writing! The grant has allowed us to create a cupboard full of  new set of Fine Motor Kits for both small group and whole class use. Students and Teachers alike are excited and engaged during our Fine Motor sessions and we are seeing the improvements in finger strength and muscle control already!

Again, thankyou to the Parents Association for their assistance to this vital Foundation Program.

Level 1

Level 1’s really enjoyed Education Week last week.

They participated in a range of activities such as the cross country which saw a lot of students display resilience and good sportsmanship. The multi-age day was a highlight rotating around engaging activities with students from different year levels.

They especially enjoyed the National Simultaneous Storytime where they read the book ‘The Speedy Sloth’, written by Rebecca Young.

The story enabled students to follow the adventures of the lovable protagonist. The students were enthralled as they discovered the sloth's remarkable agility and determination, defying expectations and inspiring them to believe in their own hidden strengths.

The National Simultaneous story time was followed by the arrival of grandparents, who were greeted with warm hugs and beaming smiles from their eager grandchildren.

This was a wonderful opportunity for students to bond with their grandparents and indulge in the pleasures of conversation, delicious morning tea, and creative colouring.

Level 3

This week in Level 3 we have been practising our skills as poets!

After tasting some chocolate, we recorded our experience in a traditional Japanese Haiku poem. The formula of three lines comprising of five syllables, seven syllables and finishing with five syllables was a fun challenge!

Chocolate

The cool creamy world,

the yum ultimate feeling,

a good sensation.

                                     Aarav

Chocolate

Creamy milky melt

it smells like cocoa powder,

sugary and brown.

                                     Saige

Chocolate

It is really yum,

tastes like heaven and creamy,

it melts in your mouth.

                                   Oliva and Ariana

Level 4

Over the past couple of weeks, Level 4 students have enjoyed learning about 2D shapes and 3D objects and all their features.

We learnt that pyramids have triangular sides whilst prisms have rectangular sides and both are named by the shape of their base. We’ve made 3D objects with plastic shapes, taken photos around the school and made powerpoint displays and also made robots with different types of recycled 3D Objects. Mr Jenkins is just trying to work out if ‘Bob’ can teach his class for him and if the kids will notice if he’s not there.

We’ve also been learning all about the earth and the impact on the earth of humans, weather and tectonic plate movement. Information reports about the earths spheres and earths layers along with Google Earth projects about global events that have impacted the earth have all helped us to get excited about our Inquiry projects that we are beginning.
