School of Entrepreneurs

From the SOE Head of School

Stages 5 and 6 is a crucial time for students in their educational journey as they make choices that can shape their future. By making positive choices, students develop qualities such as resilience, integrity, empathy and responsibility, shaping their character and paving the way for future success. Prioritising studies, active learning, engaging in positive social interactions and finding discipline through positive choices contributes to academic success and opens doors to a brighter future. Positive choices in friendships create supportive environments, boosting self-esteem, enhancing social skills and providing inspiration. Making positive choices when managing emotional well-being, including stress management and self-care, promotes happiness and resilience. In our partnership of learning, it is important that together we empower all students to make informed choices in order to set them up for lifelong success. At St Luke’s, we as educators, strive to empower students with the tools to assist them to make decisions and choices that are always in their best interest. Striving to empower students with the tools to make positive decisions and choices in an era of abundant choice has a transformative impact on their personal growth, academic success and future prospects. It equips them with essential life skills that go beyond simply making choices, enabling them to become well-rounded individuals capable of navigating complex situations and contributing positively to society. We continue to focus on this as part of our moral imperative in our work.

FROM AROUND THE GROUNDS

Year 9 Geography

Students in Year 9 Geography have been studying the ways in which urban places change with the introduction of factors like migration, climate change, gentrification, and industrialisation. As a part of this topic, the students were provided a skill focused matrix of activities to choose from. Whether students were more visual learners or kinesthetic, numerical or literacy focused, there was a task to meet everyone’s interests and learning preferences at the surface, deep, and transfer level of the inquiry process.

The reception from students in 9 White was outstanding with many really excited to get more choice in their learning. Here are a few samples of the fabulous work completed.

Year 9 English Incursion - Author Workshops

Over the past few weeks our Year 9 Students have been engaged in a full day immersive creative writing experience where they have had unparalleled access to industry professionals.

Our students were extremely fortunate to work with James Knight, award-winning television reporter and bestselling author of biographies, Will Kostakis award winning author for young adults and screenwriter and playwright Maryam Master.

Students worked through a plethora of activities where they learnt that any item or experience, good or bad, can become a springboard for a story. They experimented with voice, story arcs and developing characters by chronicling  their progression through their moment or experience of change.

We look forward to continuing this great writing in our class groups in the terms ahead and thank our authors for their great enthusiasm in sharing the love of their craft with us.

Year 10 Excursion to Western Sydney Careers Market

Our St Luke's Year 10 students visited the Greater Western Sydney Careers Market to explore potential career pathways and further education options available to them. Students engaged with over 190 exhibitors including  universities, registered training organisations,  apprenticeships,  private colleges, professional associations and employers to ask questions, seek information and make informed decisions about their future.

Year 10 Macbeth - Riverside Parramatta

On Wednesday 17 May, Year 10 visited the Riverside Theatre in Parramatta to watch a live performance of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth performed by theatre company Sports for Jove.

One of Shakepseare’s most immersive and haunting plays follows the journey of a murderous ascent to ‘greatness’ of a husband and wife who believe they can control time and destiny. It was a deeply atmospheric, faithful and exciting introduction to the play for our Year 10s.

Noopur P (Year 10 Navy)

“It was a great experience and I would love to do something similar again!”

Shreya P (Year 10 Teal) “I enjoyed the snippet of humour to break away from the unpredictable madness of the story, but it was the madness itself that drew the attention to the storyline.”

Year 11 Legal Studies

Legal Studies allows students to develop a range of skills including structuring an

argument, conducting research and being able to showcase an understanding of national and world events. In Year 11 Legal Studies, we are currently studying the topic of the Individual and the Law, which investigates different methods of resolving disputes between individuals. In this process we have looked at the use of courts as a method of resolving disputes as well as Alternative Dispute Resolution options such as negotiation and mediation. To further understand the positives and negatives of these options, we had a debate! This was a fantastic way for our Legal Studies students to use their critical thinking skills, show off their hard work in class, voice opinions and listen to others.

St. Luke's College recently celebrated a momentous event that will forever be etched in its history - the highly successful House Launch Day. Students from all grade levels came together to participate in a range of team-building activities, challenges, and novelty events. The highlight of the day was the unveiling of the house crests and mottos, which symbolise the values and aspirations of each house: Einstein, MacKillop, DaVinci, Curie, King, and Teresa. The House Launch Day left an indelible mark on St. Luke's College as an event filled with camaraderie, spirit, and excitement.

These activities allowed the students to express their creativity and individuality, creating a sense of unity among the diverse student body.

A defining moment of the House Launch Day was the grand reveal of the house crests and mottos. Each house was represented by a distinct crest, capturing the essence of their respective namesakes. The crests incorporated symbols and imagery that reflected the accomplishments and values associated with great personalities such as Albert Einstein, Mary MacKillop, Leonardo da Vinci, Marie Curie, Martin Luther King Jr., and Mother Teresa.

Accompanying the crests were inspiring mottos that encapsulated the core principles each house aimed to uphold. These mottos served as a constant reminder to students of their shared values and aspirations, promoting a strong sense of identity and purpose within each house community.
