Year 9 IGNITE

Excursion to the SA Maritime Museum

Mr Raphael Zadey, HASS Coordinator

On 18 May two IGNITE HASS classes participated in a full-day excursion to the South Australian Maritime Museum at Port Adelaide.

Upon arrival the students were provided with a detailed exploration of key aspects of South Australia’s maritime and migration histories, aspects that provided a wealth of detail to enhance their understanding of 18th and 19th Century nation building.

The experience was further enhanced with a guided tour of the Active II, a full-sized indoor replica of the original Active, built in 1873. Students then had the opportunity to explore the sleeping conditions (berths) of migrants who made Australia home, ranging from the truly spartan of the late 17th and early18th centuries, rats included, to the more comfortable albeit smelly cabins of the post-WWII steamers.

The highlight of the day was a tour of the inner port on the former police launch Archie Badenoch, which included a few sightings of the Port River’s famous dolphins.
