My Career Insights – Morrisby Program

Congratulations to Year 9 students for completing the Morrisby profiling in Term 1 and the 1:1 Unpacking Interviews with a Morrisby trained Careers Advisor in Term 2.

The Careers Team was extremely impressed with all students as they met with the Morrisby advisors, their maturity and commitment to the program was wonderful to see.

Each student had the opportunity to ‘unpack’ their profile with a Morrisby trainer advisor, allowing students to understand where their strengths lie, and how their strengths, abilities, motivators, and personality types are suited to occupations.  This process is so important when choosing senior level subjects that align with their strengths and career aspirations.

Students can investigate over 600 careers descriptions, including videos, case studies and useful links to make informed choices about their career path.

Students have lifetime access to their Morrisby account, allowing them to re-visit their current results and profile, as well as repeat their profile in later years, allowing them to keep their profile relevant to each of life’s stages.

Students that have enrolled at BHHS after the completion of the Morrisby program in year 9 can access the program, please contact the Careers Team for information.

Year 10 Work Experience Program

The Work experience Program continues to run throughout the year for any Year 10 student interested undertaking a placement.

Students participated in the Work Experience Workshop in week 4 of term. After this workshop, we have been answering a lot of enquiries and assisting students with the required paperwork to complete work experience.

If students are interested in the program and would like to know more, they can chat to a careers team member.  The Work Experience Handbook has been posted on Year 10 Teams for easy access for students.

This term we have had the pleasure of supporting students during placements at Warrandyte Diary, The Salvation Army, Victoria Opera, Box Hill Tennis Club, Swinburne University and GTAC (Gene Technology Access Centre at Melbourne University).

We look forward to students sharing their experiences when they return from placement and supporting students with placements in the future.

A reflection about the Work Experience Program from Beatrice and Gabby…

Beatrice

During Term 2 I had the opportunity to do my work experience at the Warrandyte Diary, a local newspaper based in the outer-Melbourne suburb of Warrandyte.

My role included proof-reading, layout, research, accompanying the Editors when they went out to interview people for articles.  I was also given the opportunity to research and write my own article, which was published in the May edition of the Diary .  I was given the freedom to choose whatever subject I wanted for my article, and I chose to write about sustainability and the many small changes people can make and the things that are available to help people live more sustainably in the Warrandyte area.

With more and more journalism moving into the online space, it was a very special experience to work with experienced journalists who are working hard to keep reporting the local news and to produce a hard copy paper that helps to build community and keep people informed.

You can read Bea's article on Sustainability in the link below.

Gabby completed work experience at The Salvation Army in the Media Department

During my experience of an office atmosphere, I gained knowledge and understanding in a real-life aspect.  Helping me narrow down what I want for my future as well as skills and connections made in the workplace I visited.  Doing work experience broke up my week and gave me a chance to sample the careers I was looking to explore, additionally seeing the difference of work hours in contrast to my usual school hours.

Monash University Visit and VCE/Careers Expo

On May 5th, Year 11 students were given the opportunity of visiting Monash Caulfield for a tour of the campus and to sit in a lecture theatre to hear from the Monash Student Recruitment Team and current students about ‘Uni Life’ at Monash.  It was great to hear so many students asking questions about courses and potential degrees, the different Monash campuses and what the life of a Monash student is like.  The tour guides took us on a tour of the Design and Art wing – it was impressive to see students at work and how the space and resources differed to what’s on offer at high school!

The VCE/Careers Expo gave students a chance to speak to over 70 exhibitors, ranging from Universities and TAFE’s, Emergency Services, and employment agencies, just to name a few.  Students also had the opportunity to attend seminars, ranging from designing and implementing study schedules to information on university courses. The Caulfield showgrounds was packed with students and staff from around Melbourne.  It’s a big event in the VCE/Careers calendar and was well attended by BHHS students.

Year 12 Workshops

The Careers Team have held information workshops for Year 12 students, with information covering, further study options; ‘University or TAFE - What’s it all about?’, and the requirements when applying for ‘Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) through VTAC’.

In Term 3 all Year 12 students wanting to apply for further study will attend an assembly for information on how to set up their VTAC (Victorian Tertiary Admission Centre) account, at the same time a representative from Sarina Russo Apprenticeships will deliver information for students wanting to transition into an apprenticeship after Year 12. The Careers Team will also be available to assist with resume writing and job search skills for those wanting to enter the work force and take a GAP year.

Year 12 students can spend the next month researching University and TAFE options by attending Open Days and asking representatives information required to make informed choices for further study, before VTAC opens on August 1st.  The Careers Team will meet with each Year 12 student throughout August and September, to support and guide them through the VTAC and SEAS application process.  More information about VTAC accounts will be distributed at the start of Term 3.
