Excursion – STEM workshop by Quantum Victoria at the Grand Prix

At the end of Term 1, the class of 8Z and 9Z students received an exciting opportunity to attend the STEM program organised by Quantum Victoria held at the Grand Prix!

The students went around exploring different STEM exhibits, including:

Rocket launch: Exploring the power of chemistry as we use a chemical reaction, mixing a solid with a liquid to create a gas. The gas is used as the force for you to launch a rocket.

Reaction timer: Quantum Victoria runs the PrintACar challenge each year, where student teams from different schools design and 3D print a car which they then race against other teams for glory, a big trophy, and a 3D printer for their school.  Part of the racing is to beat the other teams with your reactions on the trigger which launches the cars. You will have the opportunity to try your hand with our tablet based reaction time simulator and see if you can have the glory of the best reaction time for the day.

Quantum Qubes: “The Viral Enigma” is a Quantum Victoria program exploring how viruses spread. It is up to the students to try to save the scientist by solving various puzzles to collect vital data. At this activity you will use our “Qubes” to work through some of the puzzles to see if you can “Think outside the Qube!”

3D Printer demonstrations: Quantum Victoria runs a number of onsite and online 3D design and printing programs. We will be demonstrating how 3D printers work and you can come along and see how the 3D printers turn plastic filament to figurines.

The experience connected students with emergent STEM projects which focuses around sustainability in the manufacturing and automotive industries. They also explored ideas around circular economies, as well as design for the environment with the use of plastics, fuels, and electricity generation.

And of course, the students got to see and hear the roar of the engines up close at the F1 race!

It was a beautiful day to be out and the students apparently gained a bunch of freebies too! 😊
