Humanities Domain

Humanities has been busy this term delivering wonderful opportunities for students to experience life beyond the classroom.

Geography News

Year 10 and 11 students travelled to Kinglake National Park and Toolangi State Forest for their fieldwork, where they learned to record observations of the forest, assess wildfire fuel loads, and carry out a transect to examine flora biodiversity.  The odd leech or two made an appearance and students braved an unfortunately wet day.  Being immersed in the elements gave students an understanding of land change in the area and the history of wildfire hazards, both valuable insights for problem solving in future land management.

Year 9 students travelled into the city to the Queen Victoria Markets to conduct fieldwork on food security and food sustainability.  They inspected the history of the market and surveyed stall holders to find out how far food travels from the farm to the market.

Business Management

Opportunities for Year 12 Business Management students so far this year have included a visit to the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie. Here is a report from two BHHS students.

Written by Annanya and Kaitlyn

The Year 12 Business Management students had the privilege of visiting the Yarra Valley Chocolatier and Ice Creamery as part of experiencing a real-world example of our current Area of Study, ‘Operations Management’. Leanne Neeland, a third-generation entrepreneur, and owner of the company provided a range of insights on what it is like to manage and operate a full-scale Australian business to produce their artistic, delectable chocolates.  For the most part, this excursion induced conversations that linked to theoretical concepts learnt in class to practical business situations such as the materials management and waste minimization strategies of chocolate. Through her in-depth explanations and extensive knowledge of the chocolatier, we were able to recognize the great deal of planning and efforts it takes to be involved in such a big business which could not possibly be recognized within the simplified explanations of our textbooks. This ultimately broadened our perspectives and encouraged us to explore businesses further.

In addition to the learning component of operating a business we were given the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a chocolatier and pastry chef as we got to go behind the scenes of making our own decorated chocolates and tasting their flavourful popular chocolate and ice-cream choices!

Year 11 students have held their annual Market Day Stalls event with most stalls selling out during the lunch time break.  Students learn strategies to improve efficiency of business operations, create their own business concept, conduct market research, advertising and financial accounting.

Legal Studies

We are thrilled to share the highlights of a remarkable court excursion on May 12th.  Year 11 and 12 students visited the Supreme Court and participated in an engaging Juries Program.

Observing a live court case from the public gallery, students gained firsthand insight into the legal system.  The interactive Juries Program allowed them to role-play and understand the jury selection process alongside peers from another school.

A major highlight was interacting with Justice Kristen Walker, a respected member of the Court of Appeal Division.  Students had the privilege of hearing from her and gaining valuable insights into the judicial system.

The court excursion fostered a deeper appreciation for the legal system and inspired students as future citizens.  Witnessing the Supreme Court in action and engaging with a legal professional broadened their horizons.
