National Reconciliation Week

Monday 29 May marks the beginning of National Reconciliation Week 2023.  This year’s theme is ‘Be a Voice for Generations’.

The library will house a new book display featuring First Peoples perspectives and topical issues such as Native title / Land Rights, 1967 Referendum, The Stolen Generations and The Voice to Parliament.  There will be colouring sheets available and various other activities around the school.

Please note that at the end of NRW2023 week all NAIDOC competition entries are to be submitted to the library desk.  We have some fantastic giveaways (hair scrunchies, NAIDOC lapel pins, wrist bands) for the first 30 entries!

National NAIDOC week Competition

Right now, the library is promoting a national competition for NAIDOC week which is celebrated later in the year.  It is a Poster design Competition for years 7-9 and Essay Writing Competition for years 10-12.  Entry forms available at the library or by clicking onto the link provided.

There is the opportunity to have student entries displayed in Parliament House during NAIDOC week this year and win amazing prizes.  All entries to be handed in to the library desk by Friday 2 June.

Book Club

Book club members met last Friday to discuss the novella Blueback and the first book in the series of the same name, The Maze Runner.  The Maze Runner was by far the favourite book this term, with lively discussion and a blanket of excitement about the brand new James Dashner book being published later on this year.

Term 2 Book Club titles are now available to borrow at the library desk - The Brink, Family of Liars and Gone.  Term 2 Book Club will be held on Friday 16 June.

Students are welcome to drop by the library or email library@mgsc.vic.edu.au to add their name to the Book Club mailing list.

Sun Project CBCA Shadow Judging 2023 Begins

Students are meeting in the library on Friday 19 May to discuss the 2023 Shadow Judging Shortlist. The library is delighted to announce that this year we will host an author talk to launch MGSC Book Week 2023 celebrations.

Author Rebecca Lim, who won the CBCA YA Book of the year 2023 for her novella Tiger Daughter, will present ideas about the writing process and take questions from a Q&A panel run by our Shadow Judges from 2022.  This event is made possible through PFA funding and I would like to acknowledge the fantastic work and generosity of our parents and friends association.

The Children's Book Council of Australia is inviting young voices from across Australia to join the conversation about the books on their Book of the Year Shortlist.  Program flyer. Criteria:

  • Be 13 - 18 years of age
  • Read ALL of the six shortlisted books, to be announced at the end of April
  • Discuss these titles with your peers against the CBCA Book of the Year Awards criteria and create a response during lunchtime meetings
  • Vote for the 2023 winners.

If you meet the above criteria, and are up to this exciting challenge, email library@mgsc.vic.edu.au with your details before the end of Term 1.
