Prep Bulletin

This week in Prep

This week a small group of Preps did their first cooking session in the Kids Kitchen with Karen. They made honey joys together exploring the kitchen, teamwork and building new skills. The students enjoyed their creations at lunch time. We can’t wait to see what next week's group cooks with Karen!

A Snapshot into Reading

Learning Intention: To use clues to help us sequence a sentence.

Learning Experience Overview:

In this learning experience, we focused on the third and final question for our big idea ‘How do I manage the way I react?’ The students explored strategies they can use to get back in the green zone.

Whole:

Before this learning experience we watched the video ‘Finding Your Happy Place’ by Cosmic Kids Yoga. As a class, we discussed what a happy place is and if any of the students have a happy place.

Following the discussion, the teacher modelled how to use clues to sequence a sentence. The clues focused on were matching the size of the box to the size of the words, a capital letter at the start of the sentence, a full stop at the end of the sentence and identifying/matching the initial sound at the start of the words.

Small: Students had a go at sequencing the sentence independently by using the clues modelled by the teacher. After sequencing the sentence the students drew their happy place.

Enabling: The sentence was written onto the sheet and students match the words and glue them over the top.

Extending: The words were cut up and students had to match the blends to the remainder of the word. Then they sequenced the sentence correctly on the page.

In this learning experience, students are working towards:

  • Identifying parts of a sentence - capital letter & full stop
  • Identifying and applying clues - word length, initial sounds, parts of a sentence
  • Sequencing a sentence correctly
  • Identifying a strategy to calm down - finding their happy place

Examples of students’ work:

What you can do now to continue the learning at home from this experience:

  • Discuss parts of a sentence with your child when reading books
    • Can they find a full stop and where?
    • Can they find capital letters and where?
    • The length of words and how many letters different words have.
  • Discuss strategies you use to calm down when feeling frustrated, upset, overwhelmed or angry.
  • Discuss your child’s happy place with them and practise using this strategy when they are feeling, frustrated, upset, overwhelmed or angry.
