On Tuesday 26 October the Year 10 and 11 Drama students combined for an enjoyable drama workshop with Clint Bolster, artistic director and actor from Hommunculus Theatre Company. Clint is an experienced international actor, clown, stiltwalker and physical theatre performer, who educates audiences with clowning, mask performances and workshops. Clint was recently accepted into the Cirque Du Soleil team of Clowns for future productions. You can view his work here.
This term, students in Year 11 are studying Absurd Theatre leading to their IA1 performance of Australian playwright Matt Cameron’s Mr Melancholy. Clint focused on comedy and vocal skills as techniques in this style. Previously both classes have experienced this style of theatre in performances of Matt Cameron’s play Ruby Moon. The skills learnt in the workshop were valuable for Year 11 students’ upcoming performance for assessment and acting skills for Year 10 student entering Senior Drama in 2022.
Our drama experiences continued into the night with our Year 11 and 10 excursion to La Boite Theatre to view the Australian play Michael Gow’s Away directed by Daniel Evans. It was a dynamic preview performance enjoyed by a predominantly student audience from many schools studying Senior Drama. The staging and acting skills learned in viewing professional live performances is an essential part of the Drama curriculum and evidenced in the creative directing, devising and performances that students apply to their own work. Year 11 students are also responding to the performance with an analytical essay in the mode of the External Exam style of assessment. You can view more about the play we saw here. Our Drama curriculum involves Making (devising and performing) and Responding analytical skills, reflecting industry standards.
It was a pleasure to see the level of engagement, communication and creativity our Drama students were able to produce.
