'Keep Reading. It's one of the most marvellous adventures that anyone can have.'

Lloyd Alexander

Welcome back to our students, we missed you all very much! We have some lovely new and exciting books for you to discover when you next visit your school library. Keep on relaxing with a good book, it will bring you so much pleasure as you step into new adventures, read interesting facts, dream about far away places and imagine you are somewhere special doing perhaps something you've never done but dream of doing one day. Let your mind escape to places only a book can take your imagination to! Gerry

A big thank you to Areesh for her help in the library as a library monitor during our stocktake which was a huge job. Thank you Areesh for all your work. Gerry

The Monkey

My family all live in the zoo, my job is to look after the animals. One day I was taking

the panda to the shower. The shower was next to the monkey's cage but I couldn’t hear them, which was strange, they normally make aaaaaaac…. sounds. So I went to check on the monkey’s but I didn’t see them.

Then I called my dad to come and my dad was so surprised. My dad called my

mum to check the cameras that watch over the zoo. She saw all of the monkeys jump out of the cage, when we listened to the sound, we heard beautiful music. Then we said to the zoo people, who work at the zoo, to find the sound.

We waited a long time, then my dad had a phone call, he could hear the same music coming through his phone, as on the camera. Then he heard Tim say, “I found the monkey’s!” He was very surprised and happy.

One day Mina was looking after the animals at the zoo and you will see what will happen. “Ahh what a wonderful day at the zoo,” said Mina.

         An hour later.

“I'm going to go to feed the monkeys.” She went to the monkeys and fed them.                     ”I’m finally finished feeding them.”

Two minutes later. “A MONKEY IS OUT OF THE CAGE!!” shouted Mina. “I think I forgot to close the door.”  “COME BACK HEAR!!” shouted Mina.

Forty minutes later and Mina was lost, as she was chasing the monkeys she didn’t take notice of where she was going.

“I lost him, I better go back to the zoo and check on the animals.” She looks around and cries because she figured out that she was lost. “ HELP HELP” she yells.

But now one can hear her.  “I guess I will just camp here for now.”

      Two days later.

She went yabbying to eat lunch. After eating, “I'm going to go to bed, it's getting dark.“

She woke up and went hunting and exploring. “This is so nice in the woo….. Am I dreaming I.. is t that THE ZOO!” She was so happy that she was back at the zoo.

She was so happy that she fed the animals, and gave her mum and dad a big hug.

On Monday, a boy named Ace was at the zoo doing like the Zoo Keepers do and he fed some animals. He met one of his childhood friends while he was feeding the lions. He got distracted and one lion got out of his cage.

Ace tried to get the lion back in the cage but the lion was just walking around the zoo. Everyone had to get out of the zoo fast. Ace had an idea and went to the food box to get the lion food and to make a trail leading to the lion’s cage. Once he got the lion back in the cage, he found out there were two more lions missing. Ace went searching for the lions and saw them in the elephant’s cage. And he ran over to the elephant cage and put the lion food trail down again, all the way back to the lion’s cage.

Once the lions are back in their cage, the people can come back to the Zoo again. Ace was relieved that the lion was back in the cage and he said to himself that it will never happen again.

One day, on Christmas morning, before everyone woke up, when the sun hasn't come yet, in the place named the Lost City of Atlantis Zoo, something strange was happening.  It is a big, warm and happy place but something funny and hilarious happened, the monkeys were on the loose.

There were 100 monkeys around the town. The monkeys looked hairy, had fluffy tails,  fluffy heads, and were dark blue, black, grey and yellow. They were all fat but smart and cheeky monkeys and they were really noisy. They were acting silly, they swung on people's houses and they jiggled around on people's heads.

So I brought James, my aunti, my uncle, mum, dad and the zoo keeper and then finally we lured them with a banana and caught them and put them back in a jungle because it is where they live.

By Maxie

Once there was a monkey called Dave. At the zoo, he was fed too much, so much that he became so fat, really really fat, he looked like a hot air balloon.

The Zoo Keepers decided that he needed to go to the gym for 10 days and 9 nights. He took his flashlight because it was dark at night. He worked so much that he became really strong because he did a lot of lifting weights and doing lots of running. This means he can break metal and bricks really fast.

When he finished at the gym he was fit and went back to the zoo, jumping over the gates back to his cage.

Year 3/4   Yey, we're back!!!

The first day of school was the best day ever. We did art and talked a lot. I was at home getting ready for school then I went in the car.

When I was at school my least favorite thing to do was wearing a face mask. I did get used to wearing a face mask but I didn’t want to wear it.

I saw lots of people and only one person weren’t there. I was happy to see everyone in person and it has been so long and now on Tuesday it became the best school day ever.

My favorite part was when I got to play outside with my friends and that was my favorite because I haven't played with my friends in weeks so that’s why it was my favorite part. I was super happy to be at school with my friends.     By Ishe

Freedom came on Tuesday 26th of October when I got to go back to school and saw my friends. When I got there, I went straight inside to my classroom and played Backgammon with my friends. I felt good to see my friends and play with them again.  When we came back inside after lunch, we got to do the art. I  think I did a good job because  it was very hard .

On Wednesday  we played cricket  for sport,  we all practiced  a catch and throwing and hitting. When we came inside after lunch, we did a mandala  that was really good. We were singing 'nananana' to Aaryan because he was leaving and Wednesday  was our last time we would see Aryan.     By Alex

The day when we got back to school I was a bit nervous and at the same time I wanted to see my friends. Also I was tired of online and plus, it makes your eyes turn red. And going back to school makes you feel excited, happy and nervous. And so did everybody feel like this. Another good thing about going back to school is the full experience of learning. The

teacher can explain better. Playing with friends in school is much better than playing video games. It is great to come back since we have not socialized with each other for quite a long time so it is good to be back.     By Chen

On Tuesday when we got to school, I went into my classroom and Marie told us to talk to our friends.  We did this for about an hour and it was good. We then played some board games. I played 'Four in a Row' with Aryan, Ethan, Yash and Michael.  It was good to play with my friends again. It was really good to see my friends again as I missed them.  We played outside to enjoy the sunshine.

I’m happy to be going back to school full time next week.     By Connor

My first day back at school was amazing!! I got to see all my friends and all my classmates! It was a fun day. We did art, and we sat outside for lunch!!

When we came back to school we were able to chat for 1 hour with our friends and it was really fun! The only bad part was we had to wear masks. The next session was a relaxing art session. We sat outside and I chatted for a bit with Mia and Amelia. We ate outside too.

After that me and my friends were chilling and having fun! Recess was a normal thing to do, but it was empty without the 5/6s and 2/3s, and grade 1s.

Our next session was art! We made some blackcats with witch hats! And colored it in! It looked pretty cute and Halloween - like! It was pretty fun and our day was awesome! We had a really really nice day!     By Sheen

On Tuesday we saw our friends (I was so happy to see my friends). Then we went inside. We played games for like an hour. So after that, we talked about how our lockdowns have been. Then the bell rang. We all went outside and we found a ball and played with it until the bell rang. On Wednesday we played more games in the morning and then we talked and then the bell rang so we went outside. We also did drawings for the last hour. Then we went home. (I felt really happy to go back to school).     By Zane

Year 5 Darebin Yarning Conference
Year 5 Darebin Yarning Conference

DAREBIN YARNING CONFERENCE

Over the past two weeks our Year 5 students have been participating in the City of Darebin Yarning Conference, a local council led initiative where Year 5 students from all opver the City of Darebin learn more about local Aboriginal people & culture. Unfortunately it has all been online, however the students have still found it worthwhile.

Five Things I Didn’t Know About Aboriginal People From Melbourne

Bernice Yeung

  1. The word “Narrap” means country.
  2. Aboriginal people used trees to make spears, and now they’re in abundance.
  3. Black Cherry Trees are native to the Melbourne area and they are tasty and good.
  4. They make a fire, then they place green leaves on top of the fire to create smoke - visiting someone’s house/country might bring a bad feeling so they use the smoke from the fire to “cleanse” themselves of the bad feelings and it’s called a “smoking ceremony”
  5. They use tree bark and twist/bend/break it into pieces to light the fire

New Words

  1. Narrap = country

The 5 things I learnt...

by Isabelle Mateski

  • The aboriginals make smoke to use as a cleansing tool
  • Lamandras are able to be made into baskets and can also be eaten
  • There is a type of daisy that is endangered in Wurundjeri
  • Another endangered plant is the cherry ballard
  • People dry out plants and then turn them into necklaces that keep your neck warm.

We also watched a video by the Djirri Djirri dancers. The language spoken in the song was Woiwurrung and the dancers were all female. They wore special clothing and accessories, such as possum and kangaroo skinned clothing, face paint, necklaces and leaves. They were singing abour their country and their land.

I also learnt these Woiwurrung words.

  1. tarang =  tree
  2. bungallul willomal = Bunjils home (creator)
  3. bic = country
  4. bunya bic = water country
  5. yane = walking
