New - Word Mania 2022

Our students in Grades 1 to 6 are currently participating in an online word-building competition called Word Mania, created by LiteracyPlanet. As part of the competition, schools compete against each other for major prizes and certificates.

Word Mania boosts students’ word building skills, improving their knowledge of phonemes, morphemes, affixes and plurals, as well as spelling and word recognition. Word building is a great challenge for developing complex literacy skills and is fun for students of all ages and levels.

Students can earn points for our school just by playing. They can play at school and at home using the login details provided by their classroom teacher. Word Mania can be accessed on smartphones, tablets and desktop/laptop computers.

To play Word Mania on desktops/laptops, simply head over to LiteracyPlanet’s login page and login using the username and password provided by your teacher. Once you are logged in, select the Word Mania tile in the navigation bar. To play Word Mania on a tablet or mobile device, download the free app from the Apple App Store or Google Play

Please note that by signing up to the competition, our school has agreed to follow the terms and conditions. This includes the expectations that students compete unaided and use their own skills and ability in the competition.

The ‘Warm-up Round’ is on now. This provides students with an opportunity to practice playing Word Mania before the competition begins. The ‘Competition Round’ will be held on 21 – 25 March, with the ‘Final Round’ being held on 30 March – 1 April.

So get playing and good luck!

FIRE stands for Friends Igniting Reconciliation Education and I look forward to those chosen playing a significant leadership role at St Mary's this year.

New - Shrove Tuesday

Prep Area

Shrove Tuesday in Grade Prep! Everyone had fun making (and eating) pancakes and learning about Shrove Tuesday.

5/6 Area

The Grade 5/6 students made pancakes as part of Shrove Tuesday. After discussing the reasons behind using all of the 'rich foods' in the pantry, such as eggs, flour and milk, the students worked cooperatively in groups of six to set a table, decorate a placemat and prepare their pancake batter from scratch. A memorable activity for everyone.

Grade 5/6 Enquiry Launch

Each term the grade 5/6 teachers present an Inquiry Launch to introduce the Inquiry topic for that term.

This term the students were introduced to Mrs Bryant, the visual-linguistic learner, Mr Woodward the logical-mathematical learner, Miss Junor the interpersonal learner, Mrs Loughran the bodily-kinaesthetic learner and Mrs Hicks the visual-spatial learner.  We also spoke about streotypes of these learners and how we are all actually different but equal learners.

Prep Focus Letter

In week 2 Preps letter focus was C and K. We explored words that have c, k or ck in them. We looked at words that start with these letters or end with them. We talked about ducks ending in ck and we were lucky enough that Mrs Cox had ducks hatch at her house and we got to hold and learn about ducks.
