Student Leadership
Hello, and welcome to a new school year, and a warm welcome to the new students, staff and families. My name is Bianca, one of your College Captains.
The Macleod College Student Leadership Team is constantly growing and expanding, as seen through the new roles of Environment Captain, Sports Captain, Student Ambassadors, Chess Club President, Wellbeing Leaders, Cultural Diversity Leaders and a Rainbow Group Leader.
The 2022 Student Leadership Team have been working diligently to display our new College Values - Achieve, Respect and especially that of Connect. After spending the majority of the past two years online, being able to connect with each other has never been more important. So far, we have hosted many events that have brought students together, such as Chess Club. Running weekly during lunchtimes, students of all ages and individuality gather together and connect through a battle of the minds. Principal Mr. Arney has been beaten twice by our Chess Club President.
Our values of Connect and Respect have also been displayed through our newly created Rainbow Group. Run by the Rainbow Group Leader, it provides a safe space for students and staff of the LGBTQ+ community, and allies. The group is yet to have their first gathering, but will see social activities and events that aim to educate, spread awareness and support those in our community.
The Macleod College House Team has an engagement and participation focus, developing new programs, such as the Sports Lending Program which will be implemented soon, and activities, tournaments and competitions. We have recently had our annual House Swimming Carnival, run by the House Captains, who spread colour through face painting! We patiently await the Athletics Carnival at the end of March, and are excited for the crazy costumes that will come!
Our Student Representative Council have been discussing issues such as student uniform, and recognise the importance of student voice, ensuring that positive changes occurs. This team consists of individuals from all year levels, who are passionate and driven to create change both within Macleod College, and the wider community. In addition to this team, Student Ambassadors have been selected and will be supporting the Student Leadership Team in all aspects to begin their journey in Student Leadership.
The Student Leadership Team has also expanded to implement Wellbeing Leaders, who are working on breaking the stigma of mental health, and making strong connections between students and Wellbeing Support Services. Throughout 2022, they will be supporting a variety of programs in order to create an environment where mental health is prioritised and students feel comfortable to seek help.
We have also seen the opening of our brand-new Science Building, which has already been in use for our Chess Club, where students gather around for a great game of strategy. As the year progresses, we hope to utilise the space for many new activities and continue to bring students together.
We hope you are looking forward to seeing all the things the Macleod College Student Leadership Team has in store for 2022. If you have any suggestions or issues you’d like for us to address, you are welcome to speak to the Captain Team or representatives in your year level. On behalf of the Student Leadership Team, I wish you a safe and fulfilling year!
