My 2040: Saving the Planet

Year 9 Elective

Solar Oven Construction

This term, students in the My 2040 elective have been learning about renewable energy.

Students have been learning about renewable energy including solar energy. After working in small groups to construct pizza box ovens, students were able to harness the sun’s radiant energy by cooking S’mores outside the classroom.

Fun fact: The Goulburn Valley is already home to a solar farm that can be found in Numurkah. It consists of 373,839 photovoltaic panels spread over 515 hectares, producing 120 megawatts of electricity. It powers the Melbourne tram system!

There are plans for another solar farm just out of Mooroopna, which will produce enough renewable energy equivalent to taking either 78,000 cars off the road or planting 400,000 trees, producing enough electricity to power approximately 43,000 homes.
