GSSC Leadership Team

Dear Families,
I am really pleased to be back working with the Greater Shepparton Secondary College community as the Acting Wanganui Campus Principal. I will be in this role until December, and I look forward to re-connecting with many of the students, staff and families that I have previously come to know well, in addition to meeting those of you who I will be meeting for the first time.
We have enjoyed a smooth start to term two, and I’m pleased to report that the tensions that were present at the Campus are now well and truly behind us. Students have accepted the challenges offered to step up as leaders, and we are developing a school culture that will allow our current Year 10 and 11 students to move onto the new site in 2022 as genuine role models, willing to assist and support the younger students when we all come together as the Greater Shepparton Secondary College on one site.
The transition years of 2020 and 2021 were always going to be the most difficult in our move from four individual schools to the one, and I continue to be impressed with the commitment and dedication of our staff in doing everything they can to make this successful.
The impact of remote learning for much of last year has been evident to us, and we are working hard with students to fill any gaps in their learning. VCE and VCAL students are approaching a very busy time of the year with regards to assessments and work placements. The pace of this work doesn’t slow, highlighting the importance of organisation and planning, together with taking time to rest, socialise and to be involved in other recreational pursuits.
Earlier this week I attended the Grade 6 Information night, where our College Captains and three Year 7 students spoke about their experiences at Greater Shepparton Secondary College. It was uplifting to hear such positive comments from them, all their own thoughts without prompting or direction as to what they should say.
In particular, the speech given by one of our College Captains, Caitlyn Glasson, reflecting on her time in secondary school, beginning at Mooroopna SC in Year 7 through to now at the Wanganui Campus in Year 12, was a timely reminder about why we have chosen this direction for the future of secondary education across Greater Shepparton.
We have designed the school around student wellbeing and learning at the centre of all decisions, and the creation of the new buildings will enable us to offer programs and facilities that will be the envy of all schools around the country.
Alongside this, the recent news of a specialist outpost in Shepparton to support the professional learning of our teachers was also a welcome announcement.
Back in the present, as I read through this newsletter before submitting this report, I am reminded of the range of great things that have been happening across the three campuses already this term. Our students have been provided with so many terrific opportunities, and I have been impressed by what I’ve seen and heard regarding the enthusiasm and commitment shown by our students in taking up these challenges.
It is also a great credit to the commitment of all within and outside of the GSSC community, that is enabling our students to receive the well-rounded education that they are experiencing.
We look forward to providing further updates on the present happenings across the three campuses, along with our future planning as the year progresses.
