Assistant Principal's Report

I hope all families got to commemorate ANZAC Day on Sunday in your own ways.  Our small service at school last week, run by the school captains was quite moving.  Thank you to our school captains for running this service for the Langwarrin PS students and Mr Flynn for playing the Last Post live. I got down to my local dawn service and was astounded at the turn out.  It’s great to see so many (young and old) remembering our fallen.

Prep Tours

Tours begin on 11th May.  You must register to take one of our tours.  Please see the tour schedule at: http://www.langwarrinps.vic.edu.au/enrolment/ Contact our office to register!

I will open enrolments on 10th May.  If you have a younger child who has a sibling at LPS please enrol early to help us with 2022 planning.

Some positive results

This week our staff have been looking at our data on the students ability of our students to solve their four process number facts. This includes short addition, subtraction, multiplication (times tables) and related division facts.  The data was incredibly pleasing that over the course of Term 1 we have seen significant growth across the school.  We know that our students will find problem solving challenging if they don’t have the basic knowledge of the four processes. Well done to our students who keep practicing their four processes on programs like Mathletics.

Attitudes to School Survey

Each year the Department of Education & Training (DET) surveys all students across the state in Years 4, 5 and 6 to gauge their general attitude towards school. A number of factors are measured on the survey that largely relate to student relationships & connectedness, wellbeing and teaching & learning. Our School Strategic Plan has targets related to areas of this survey.

The survey results are an important source of information for schools and they help to guide the decision-making in each school. Over the coming weeks, later next month we will administer the survey to each individual class and it typically takes students around 30 minutes to complete. Results from this survey are usually available during Term 3. I will share some of the key findings from this survey through the newsletter when they become available next term.

It’s Been in the News

We have begun looking at the new mandated curriculum around sexuality and consent.  We are well placed as a school due to the THRIVE curriculum we already deliver however there will be areas that we need to address at age appropriate levels.  Our school will work with Woodlands, Langwarrin Park and Elisabeth Murdoch College to develop a consistent approach, parent information and staff training.

Restorative Practices

Simon Dewar presented on Tuesday night via Zoom about the work he is doing with Langwarrin PS primarily around restorative practices. Thank you to those of you who took the time on a Tuesday evening to see how we partner with Real Schools and how the work can be translated into the home.  I will put the link to the session on our Facebook page if you didn’t get a chance to watch.

Have a great week,
