Live Love Learn

Dear Families,

How wonderful it has been this week to have all of the students back at school.  I have been very impressed by the calm, no fuss attitude the students have had with getting back to onsite school life.  My sincere thanks to all of the incredible Galilee Staff as well for their hard work and dedication to the school.

Wellbeing

Each week, we will provide some tips for parenting anxious children, as well as a meditation to practise together at home.

Tip 1:  Reassure your child that worry is normal.

  • Let your child know that it is normal to get worried from time to time and that you also have worries.
  • Remind your child that anxiety is not dangerous, it is just a feeling that people have.
  • Explain how you can calm yourself down when feeling worried by talking to someone or finding a distraction that works for you.
  • Role Model to your children how you calm yourself down when feeling worried.

Here is the meditation we practised in class this week:

Balloon: Peace Out   (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBnPlqQFPKs).

It would be very relaxing, as well as very, beneficial to practise it together with your child/ren!

Disco

We are hoping there will be a further easing of restrictions to allow the School Disco that has been rescheduled for Friday 25th June to proceed.

P-2 Disco 5-6pm

3-6 Disco 6.30pm - 7.45pm.

If you had already purchased a ticket for the previous date and are now unable to attend there are two options;

you may like to donate the $5 entry fee to the school OR if you require a refund, please email Carmen Carnovale on ccarnovale@gsm.vic.edu.au with your name and your child’s name and a refund will be organised for you.

Climate Change

In Year 6 we have been learning about Global warming and how humans have an impact on this. We watched a David Attenborough documentary called “A Life On Our Planet” on how the world is changing and what will happen if we don’t try to stop climate change. We have been linking this topic to other subjects such as writing, reading and religion. We are also working on a STEM project in which we are trying to reduce our carbon footprint. The students are creating slides, i-movies or some other representation of how they are changing for the good of the environment. Some things we can do to reduce our carbon footprint are turn off lights and water, reduce shower time, turn off appliances at source and eat meat less frequently. We also learnt about what will happen if global warming continues. So if we all do our little bit, the planet will be a much healthier, happier place.

Footy Cards

We have lots of students who are bringing their footy cards to school. Students are enjoying showing their friends and comparing collections during recess and lunchtime. Unfortunately we have had a few issues with footy cards being swapped, traded or borrowed and due to this have decided that while at school, students will not be able swap, trade or borrow cards.

Parent Helpers

It is with great excitement that we will be able to welcome Parent Helpers back into the classroom in early Term 3 to assist with student learning from Prep to Year 6.

We are holding two Parent Helpers’ Workshops in Week 3 of next term for parents who are new to helping in the classroom at Galilee. You will only need to attend one of these workshops. Both workshops will be online. The link to the online workshops are on the Parent Calendar. One workshop will be held on Thursday 29th July at 9.30am and the other workshop will be held on Friday 30th July at 9.30am. You will be required to attend one of these workshops, if you have not attended a Parent Helper course in the past and if you are interested in assisting in the classroom this year.

You will need a current Working With Children’s Check and an availability to assist at a set time once a week. For example, every Tuesday morning. This will help teachers with forming a roster and knowing who will be helping on particular days. A committed time once a week is usually preferable as it allows both the teacher and the Parent Helper to develop a professional relationship to support all the students in the class. It also allows the Parent Helper to develop skills by working at regular times and thus knowing the routines and expectations of the class. If you are only able to help in the classroom occasionally, this is fine too.

If you have attend the Parent Helper Course in previous years, hold a current Working with Children's Check and are interested in helping in the classrooms again this year, we will be seeking your availability in early Term 3.

We continue to value all the support and assistance from Parent Helpers and thank you in anticipation.

Garden Club - Time to get Growing

Yes, Green thumbs of  Galilee, it is official Galilee is Growing, literally!

With an overwhelming embrace from children across all year levels it is amazing to see our kitchen garden taking shape.

Last week saw Charlie and Paul take a visit to the local Bunnings store in Port Melbourne, and take delivery of a very generous donation of plants, to give our kids a real chance to get this initiative off the ground. We also have received other donations from the families and children, which have seen us commence the pioneering plantation part of the garden. With our garden beds now prepared after some keen sieving sessions at lunch times, we see the children invested in the project and their boundless enthusiasm is being rewarded.

NEWS FLASH!!!

Next week see us commence our Scarecrow Workshops, to build and dress up and place over the garden. This will add some further soul and vitality to our garden, and give it that authentic look. If you have some old clothes, shirts, boots, pillow cases, panty hose etc, we would love to hear from you. We also would like to get the children to donate any old footy boots, shoes etc, for our next project that remains under wraps.

We are very happy with the progress of the growth to date and Mr Millar was kind enough to sample the first harvest of salad for his lunch. Needless to say he survived this organic smorgasbord!

Keep up the energy kids and we look forward to seeing you in the garden. From little things, big things grow.
