Sleek Geeks Science Eureka Competition

Three Year 7 students have been hard at work preparing for the National Sleek Geeks Science Eureka Competition – a science communication prize organised by the Australian Museum. This year, students had to prepare a two minute video on the theme of 'BIG' and our John XXIII students delivered in a big way. The topic that the students chose included:

  • 'Manipulating Atoms' by Phoebe Walsh (Year 7 St Louis) – the Big science on nanoparticles.
  • 'Big - It’s a Matter of Perspective' by Charlotte Long (Year 7 St Louis)  – the view according to a Tardigrade
  • 'Physics of the Big Gold Swing' by Jovi Gibson (Year 7 St Louis) – all about how to get the biggest swing in golf.

We wish Phoebe Walsh, Charlotte Long and Jovi Gibson the best of luck for the judging.

Year 9 Outdoor Education Camp

The Semester One, Year 9 Outdoor Education Camp was a wonderful experience for all involved. An experiential learning opportunity, the camp was held in the natural bush land of the Manjedal Activity Centre just east of Byford. Students were able to apply skills acquired during classroom learning which included camp craft (Trangia cooking, tent construction, fire lighting and cooking), team building exercises, minimal impact strategies and navigation.

I am pleased to report that our students conducted themselves extremely well, which should see some very favorable assessment marks as a result. A huge thank you to all involved; especially our staff attending this camp: Mr Cameron Haines, Miss Catherine Roberts, Miss Jessica Pillera, Mr Declan Sharp, Miss Mindy Toleman and Mr James McLaughlin. The collaboration of all involved was greatly appreciated.

ACC Team Celebration

Sport at John XXIII College has always been strong, however in our most recent interschool carnivals our students have really started to shine. These results could not happen without the sportsmanship, team comradery, passion, and determination to achieve their absolute best on these memorable days.

To acknowledge our students and their recent success in all three ACC Carnivals, a celebratory lunch will be held on Monday 14 June for all students involved in the following ACC teams:

  • 2020 ‘Stay in A’ Athletics Champions
  • 2021 ACC Swimming Champions
  • 2021 ACC Cross Country Champions

Athletics Training

Athletics is finally upon us, and we can’t wait to begin training with all our talented students. Last year we achieved our goal and stayed in the ACC A-Division Athletics Carnival. This year our aim is to do the same and hopefully some more!

In response to many students’ requests, athletics training will start earlier this year from Monday 14 June and take place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the lead up to the ACC A Division Athletics Carnival. Please see the schedule attached for the remainder of this term.

If you would like to hire a pair of college spikes for the duration of the season, please email jessica.pillera@cewa.edu.au or see Miss Pillera in the PE office. There is a $50 deposit required.

ACC Hockey Challenge

Next week, the students below will be representing the College in the 2021 ACC Hockey Challenge. Our girls will play on Tuesday 15 June and our boys on Thursday 17 June.

We wish both teams the best of luck in their games next week.
