Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

We often hear in our conversations phrases or words such as … it broke my heart… heartache… I love you with all my heart… cross my heart… have a heart… my heart bleeds for you… in a heartbeat… from the bottom of my heart. These phrases most often express pain, suffering, compassion, empathy, deepest love or tenderness toward the other. The heart as well as having a bodily function is also the metaphor we use for expressing our emotions.

On Friday, our Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.  His heart experienced all of the emotions we feel in our own hearts. His heart of love and compassion went out to the poor, the marginalised, the suffering. The Heart of Christ suffered too and was pierced and blood and water flowed out. Throughout his life, Jesus' heart was strengthened by his faithfulness and by walking with the other.

Jesus’ Heart is the heart of the Heart of the world,
and the centre of the Centre of the Universe’
(Teilhard De Chardin)

At Joseph’s, we also turn to St Joseph and St Mary of the Cross MacKillop to show us how to carry a Sacred Heart within us. Joseph was a model to Jesus of a sacred heart and Jesus who would have been deeply influenced by Joseph. Joseph’s heart caused him to care deeply for Mary and Jesus to such an extent that he had to leave his own country and go into Egypt for their care and protection.

Mary MacKillop's life was about the heart of faith and care and compassion for the maginalised. She wrote in 1890,

‘Another month has passed and now we are in that of the Sacred Heart-and may that loving Heart bring to one and all of you Its own true spirit-Its spirit of love, true charity and sweet humility.’

Our Students carry within them the Sacred Heart?

Young children have a natural inclination toward helping others without prejudice. It is in their daily interactions with others we often see them open their hearts to other children. Sometimes this causes them heartbreak too. They need the adults in their lives to encourage them not to lose faith in people, that Christ too had his heart pierced and now lives in their hearts.

Teaching children the skills to overcome a broken or pierced heart so that they may remain open-hearted toward others will create in them a happier life. A heart of stone is not a healthy way to live.

Our students too are called to reach out to the 'poor' in our school, those who are struggling with their learning, have physical needs or disabilities, those who are feeling poorly, left out or overlooked. Mary MacKillop asks us:

Let us show this love in our acts, bearing one another, forgiving and forgetting.   Mary MacKillop 1890

It is important that adults affirm young people for even the smallest of actions and let them know that they carry within them the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Have a wonderful week.

St Joseph, pray for us.
