Pi Day
On March 14th, Thornbury High celebrated another successful Pi Day. Students competed against each other to recite as many of the decimal places of pi as they could remember. For those not competing, there were many pi shaped biscuits to enjoy. A new record was set this year - Miah Walker of Year 12 recited pi correctly to 140 decimal places! This doubled the previous record held by Terence Wang and Alex Crawford who jointly held the record of 70 places. Miah had the honour for 2021 of throwing a cream pie at Mr Broadby as a reward for her dedication and perseverance. Students are encouraged to look out for this annual event, especially if they plan on setting a new record in 2022!
Finance Incursion (Melbourne University)
In May, all Year 10 students participated in a three-part incursion on ‘Financial Literacy’, run by third year Commerce students from the University of Melbourne. As part of their tertiary studies, these university students designed a series of three lessons on budgeting, debt and consumer rights and visited the school to deliver these sessions during our Maths classes.
Some of the feedback from our students included:
“The Street Finance Program was a fun and interesting program that ran over a few math lessons. The young presenters from Melbourne University were really nice and friendly and made the lessons engaging. We did many interactive activities in groups or pairs, so it was fun and enjoyable with friends. Over only a few lessons, I learnt really useful information such as my consumer rights, how to budget, make financial decisions, and more”.
Mathematics and Statistics Research Competition
It's not too late for students to enter this competition.
