Year 9 Food Truck Market Stalls

Year 9 Business and Entrepreneurship and Food Technology Students

Congratulations to our Year 9 Business and Entrepreneurship and Food Technology students who impressed us with their food truck market stalls on Wednesday 1 June.

Students demonstrated 21st-century skills of collaboration, problem solving and creativity to plan and implement their market stalls. The Middle Years Courtyard came alive with the bustle and hive of activity as our students worked tirelessly to bring their business idea to life. This was our first cross-curricular task, which allowed students who study both Business and Food Technology to broaden their lens of understanding and apply skills and strategies they learn in both classes to deepen their overall understanding. This involved working in the Business class to plan a social media campaign, write marketing plans and deliver a shark tank presentation to the Senior Leadership team, researching recipes, trialling recipes, creating timelines and developing costing sheets in Food Technology.

Feedback from staff and students alike has been very positive and the day ended with exhausted and proud students who couldn’t believe how successful they had been. The valuable lesson of ‘putting in what you want to get out was definitely learnt.

Medieval Fayre

On Tuesday afternoon, Year 8 Students were invited to a Medieval Fayre. Consolidating their work on Medieval Europe in Social Science, students were able to dine as nobility whilst their teachers took on the role of serving peasants. Students enjoyed an ‘authentic’ feast of soup, chicken, bread and fruit whilst being entertained by Ms. Haddock with excerpts from the Canterbury Tales and our resident Year 8 jesters. Following the feast, students participated in a range of medieval games, including quoits, juggling and skipping. This experience helped bring learning to life and created a memorable afternoon for Year 8.

RACI Regional Titration Competition

On Wednesday 1 June, 15 Year 11 and 12 students participated in the RACI Regional Titration CompetitionThe RACI's Titration Competition is designed to encourage secondary students who enjoy Chemistry, particularly its practical side, to develop their scientific skills and understanding. It provides students with an opportunity to experience conducting an experiment in a laboratory environment at a local university in their state and the chance to compete at a national level. This year owing to COVID restrictions around the number of students allowed at local universities, we ran the competition at school. The girls enjoyed the challenge and worked in teams to analyse the acid samples assigned to them.

The da Vinci Decathlon

The Queensland da Vinci Decathlon is an interschool competition designed to celebrate the academic gifts of students in the spirit of an Olympic Decathlon. Lateral thinking is the key to da Vinci's success, as students are offered unique opportunities to extend themselves intellectually and creatively. Named after one of the world's greatest thinkers and scholars, the competition places a particular emphasis on higher-order thinking skills, problem-solving, teamwork and creativity. This week, a number of students across Years 5, 6, 7 and 8 competed in the decathlon. Students competed in teams of eight across ten disciplines including Ideation, Engineering, Mathematics, Code Breaking, Art and Poetry, Science and English. Our teams proved to be excellent ambassadors for our College. Their success was a combination of weeks of training in the lead up to the event and their teamwork, perseverance and exceptional efforts on the day.
