Year 3’s Excursion to Ngutana-Lui

By Lia and Quinton, Year 3 Class Leaders

On Thursday 26 May, Year 3 went to Ngutana-Lui Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Studies Centre. When we arrived, we ate our morning tea and were soon out in the field learning how to throw boomerangs. It was great fun! Some children even had their boomerang almost come back to them!

We enjoyed painting a goanna using traditional techniques; it was incredible in every way! We used tools called bamboo skewers and natural-coloured paints. We also got red ochre paint on our wrists, and some of us even kept it on until the next day! Overall, Year 3 had a fabulous time at Ngutana-Lui. We enjoyed learning about Aboriginal people, the first people of our nation.

Thank you so very much to all parent helpers who volunteered to assist us on the day.

Fiver For A Farmer

On Friday 10 June, Gibson House charity, Fiver for a Farmer, will be held so all students are able to wear their best farming outfit at school. Every participant is asked to contribute $5.00 which will go to Drought Angels so they can help farmers that have been devastated recently by droughts, bushfires, floods and a mouse plague. Drought Angels provides personalised and practical assistance in the form of food hampers, care packs, and pre-paid debit cards and gift cards to use in local businesses.

A bake sale will also be held at morning tea.

Date:             Friday 10 June

Attire:            Jeans, country shirt, hat, closed in shoes or boots.

Cost:             $5.00

Communication

Please note that every effort is made to keep families up to date with College activities via The Collective and College app. Thank you to those families who direct others to these sources of information.

On the College app, you are able to refine the notifications you receive in Settings. By accessing the Subscriptions function, you can select the music, sport and year level information specific to your child/ren. Through the app, you also have access to the College calendar, Collective newsletter, Tuckshop, College Shop and Parent Lounge, where you can view your child/ren’s timetable.

Book Swap

Student Representative Council

Due to the success of our Book Fair, the Student Representative Council will be holding a ‘book swap’. The book swap will take place from Monday 6 June to Friday 10 June during lunchtime in front of the Primary office. For a gold coin donation, Primary students are encouraged to bring along good quality books they no longer read at home. They will be able to swap a book for a book to continue their love of reading! If students do not wish to swap any books, they are more than welcome to make a gold coin donation. All money raised will be donated to the Smith Family charity to help a child in need.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge

It has been wonderful to receive some completed reading record forms from our Primary students. The Premier’s Reading Challenge is open until Friday 26 August. This is an annual initiative that aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read for pleasure and learning. Please see your class teacher if you have misplaced your child/ren’s reading record form. Students who complete the challenge have their efforts recognised through the receipt of a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier of Queensland.
