Theatre Studies

On the Friday of our first week back, the Yr 9 & 10 Theatre Studies classes and Mrs. Ward's class escaped Nossal High School and went to Southbank Theatre to watch the show, Slap. Bang. Kiss. The play is about "three young people whose stories transform them into global symbols of revolution."

It was my first time watching a live performance and I was honestly quite amazed. The play had themes of activism, community and hope: concepts which are incredibly relevant to the times we are in. The title represents each one of the characters: Immi, who lives under occupation - SLAP; Sofia, who finds herself in a school shooting - BANG; and Darby who is trying to kiss another boy for a record 37 hours - KISS.

The three characters all initiated movements which I initially thought were unfathomable for someone their age to do. It made me think about how young people are just as capable of making a change in their community and that their age does not limit them from doing hard things. My perspective on what I am capable of were changed, even though the stories were just fiction.

Dan Giovanni, the writer of Slap. Bang. Kiss. expressed why he wrote the play: 'I meet teenagers who are sure of themselves and who have something to say, and they know why they have to say it. And I wanted to get inside of their heads... it's a bit of a love letter.'

We, the students, got to enjoy ourselves a lot during the excursion and it was refreshing to just go out - we didn’t have to attend classes. Mr. Woon, Ms. Guruparan and Mrs. Ward were there to supervise us and prevent us from committing crimes and I'd like to thank them for that.
