VCE Business Management Operations' Excursion

(Friday 20 May)

The day started off with us convening at Dandenong Station. We then split off into groups while waiting for the bus, chatting, and filling out the booklets that we were given. The bus arrived after a while, and off we headed to our first business; Nikkiso Cryoquip. Upon arrival we were greeted by a manager, Christian Born, who then presented us with a PowerPoint presentation, detailing us the ins and outs of his business. The PowerPoint presentation was, in my opinion, very informative, insightful and was helpful to us as we had to fill our booklets out with the details of the business' Operations Management, a key component of our studies. After the presentation, we were taken around on a tour of the business, allowing us to see the workers in action and the warehouse structure and products being manufactured. Our trip to Nikkiso ended with a visual display of Liquid Nitrogen being poured onto the ground, and then the smashing of a plastic box that it was in. (This was my personal favourite part of the whole trip).

Next, we ventured to Atura Hotel, in Eumemmerring, and were greeted by their enthusiastic sales manager, Lucy Symons, and the immaculately well-presented reception and Front Office Staff. We were led by Lucy on a tour around the hotel, observing room service in action, as well as the hidden gem of the Microbrewery, a key feature of the Business. Lucy answered all our questions with great poise and distinction.

We then departed Atura to the well-famous, Dandenong Market, where we were allowed to roam by ourselves, having lunch and observing the stalls and vendors in action, all of which provided us with invaluable knowledge that we then used to fill out our Operations Booklets.

Overall, it was a relaxed, yet insightful day! On behalf of the VCE Business Management Students, we would like to thank Mr Sacco and the SELLEN (Ms Broderick) for organising the excursion, our tour guides, Christian and Lucy, for their time in giving us the opportunity to attend their businesses; and Mr Armistead, for supervising us on the day!
