Eating for Good Health

The Nossal House Athletics Sports will be held on Wednesday 25 May at Casey Fields Athletic Track. Most students have signed up to participate in the wide range of track and field events. The House sports provide a fantastic opportunity for students to show their House spirit – competing and cheering on their peers.

It is extremely important that students eat a healthy and hearty breakfast on the morning to prepare them for the demands of participating in their events and prevent students from fainting or losing strength. Food, particularly foods with carbohydrates, provide the essential fuel for the body and muscles.

Some suggestions for a healthy breakfast include:

Wholegrain cereals (weetbix, nutrigrain, oats) with milk or yoghurt

Fruit, fruit salad or fruit smoothie for athletes who don’t feel hungry

Wholegrain breads / muffins with jam, vegemite, egg etc

Energy bars (for those lacking in time)

On the day students should also eat small snacks between their events and drink plenty of water.

The SRC is hoping to raise funds on the day through a BBQ so students should bring some gold coins to purchase a sausage in sauce.

The SRC have also organised for a drink van serving bubble tea, hot tea and coffee. Costs and more information will be made available via Teams to students later in the week.

Cross Country

As mentioned in the last newsletter, the top 10 place getters at the Nossal Cross Country will be competing at the division event on Tuesday 24 May at Akoonah Park. Join me in wishing our students luck in their events.

Year 11 Physical Education

The Year 11 PE students have been analysing data relating to rates of participation in physical activity in Australia. They have identified that as we age that our participation levels in physical activity reduces. This trend can have serious long term health impacts on individuals including obesity (if food intake exceeds energy expenditure), diabetes, and osteoporosis. The good news is it is reversible – so everyone should be looking for opportunities to be physically active such as parking further away so that you can walk further, use stairs instead of lifts and go for a walk with friends at lunch instead of sitting down.

Students have also been examining the long-term benefits in participating in activity including physical (improved posture, lower cholesterol, stronger bones, improved heart and lung functioning), social (increased social networks, connectedness within the community, increased opportunities to meet new people) and Mental (improved cognitive functioning, improved mood and improved sleep and energy levels)

To counteract the reducing activity levels as we age and to make physical activity more accessible to specific population groups, students have been investigating ways that they can proactively engage individuals in physical activity. Over the past couple of weeks, the class has led and trialled modified sports for individuals with a disability including Indoor Hockey, Goal ball, Circle ball and Beat the Ball. These activities have been fun, engaging and accessible to all.

Congratulations NHS Volleyball Club

Congratulations to our volleyball club for their amazing efforts at the one day tournament!! I just want to say that I'm super proud of everyone and so grateful for the opportunity we received to be able to play against other schools in Victoria. We all played spectacularly and I can proudly say that our efforts did not go to waste as our senior girls team brought back the second gold medal in the clubs history! Great work everyone and I can't wait to see how well we will play at our next tournament <3

Extra mentions to our year ten teams who both came fourth in their games on Wednesday!

Senior Girls Softball

Congratulations to the senior girls softball team who finished runners up in the Eastern Metropolitan Region and qualified to play in the state finals.

Janice Lim and Jasmine Lam shared the pitching duties, while catcher Mary Yun encouraged them during every pitch. Janice and Jasmine also played short-stop and made some good plays to first base. Kiran Kleingeld was very steady at first base, scooping up everything that came her way. Anita Chao and Angela Huang played solidly at second and third respectively, while the outfield included -

Jessica Nguyen

Rasna Preman

Saki Sivanathan

Sineka Premaratne

Manvitha Raju.

All players batted well with each of them getting many hits and scoring runs. Manvitha managed to get a hit off of a state pitcher from MacRoberson Girls School.

Scores were:  Lost to MacRob            5 - 13

                           Win to Narre Warren  13 - 2

                           Win to McKinnon        12 - 7

Good luck to the girls in the state championship.
