Science

Prep

The Prep Scientists having been learning all about moving. Moving on play equipment, moving like an animal and also investigation how toys move.  Not only are we learning about movement, we are learning to record and label our scientific observations in our science booklets. We are very proud of our junior scientists and the wonderful learning attitude they bring to the science room every week.

Level 1

Grade 1 students have been learning about man-made and natural sources of light. They explored man-made sources of light inside our Boorai Building and the impact of natural light sources both inside and outside of buildings. Grade 1 students explored how man-made sources of light travel using torches and solid or translucent objects. They paired up to develop a shadow-puppet show plan - beginning, middle and end - before using iPads, torches and their own creative characters using their hands to develop and record their own shadow-puppet shows. It was so much fun!

Level 2

Our Grade 2 Scientists have been working on the simple machine of ramps. Amazing science language and concepts such as, gravity and momentum have blown us away. Our grade 2 students are truly super scientists. Not to mention the wonderful teamwork required to set up resources, talk out predictions, record observations and make real claims about our outcomes. Super proud teachers and extremely proud science students.

Level 3/4

The 3/4 students had a blast learning about how a thermometer is used as a scientific tool to measure temperature by making their own thermometers. Students also used thermometers to measure the temperature of jars containing cold, room temperature, and hot water to practice their thermometer reading skills. The 3/4 students have also learnt about heat sources by watching a demonstration of an exothermic reaction to see how chemical reactions can cause heat and by conducting their own kinetic energy (friction) experiment by rubbing a microfibre cloth on a range of different materials to see which one is the best conductor of heat.

Level 5/6

The 5/6 students have continued their experimentation with light and electricity, experimenting with mixing various colours, investigating reflection and absorption.

Adding small mirrors and lasers into the mix, students have started creating interactive games and puzzles with their newfound knowledge. Over the coming weeks we will be refining these projects and experimenting with even more interesting behaviours of light and electricity.

Send us your science

We would love to see the science being done at home by our awesome RHPS scientists. If you would like to share the science that you have been doing at home please use this link:
