Focus on Learning

Kindergarten and Stage 1

Kindergarten Learning

This week in Kindergarten we have been super busy collecting data.  We are learning about collecting data, representing data and analysing data. To do this we have learned about tally marks; we tallied how many members in our family, including how many brothers and sisters we had. We have looked at picture graphs and column graphs and have been learning how to analyse the information on these.

Kindergarten surveyed the Staff to find out their favourite pet. Firstly we started our data collection by choosing 4 pets; dogs, horse, cats, fish. Next we walked around and asked each staff member what their favourite pet out of the 4 chosen pets were. We learned about tally marks and used these to record each staff members choice.

We then came back to our classroom and discussed our findings and created a picture graph. We learned that the most popular pet was a dog with 7 votes, then the horse with 5, the cat received 1 vote and no one voted for the fish.

Literacy:

In our Literacy rotations we have been learning about using our Eagle Eye to help find clues in the pictures and link this to beginning sounds of words. We have also been playing STAR word fly swat, where we swat the words that we know. We have also been using our tricky word tree wall to help us learn many of our important sight words and STAR words.

Stage 1 Learning

Stage 1 have been working hard on Informative texts for the last few weeks.   We have learnt the skills of researching using books and the internet, taking dot points, and then turning these dot points into paragraphs.  We have focused on animals to link to our Science Unit: "Living Things".  We have been investigating different animals and their appearance, habitat and diet.

We have practised these skills in our recent Big Writes.  Mrs Meade gives the information as dot points, and the students need to select the subheading, and create sentences about this.  See below for a snapshot of some students work!

In Mathematics we have been learning about fractions - halves, quarters and eighths.  Our focus has been ensuring that the parts of the fraction are equal and fair.  One fun activity we have completed was designing a quilt cover.  This quilt could have only two colours, and each colour had to take up exactly half of the quilt.  An added challenge was trying to make sure the quilt was still visually appealing.  The students were very engaged in this lesson.  Some of us were being very mathematical and careful with our colouring, so we didn't quite finish.  See below for some photos of our work!

We have recently finished a unit on Subtraction.  Students learnt many different strategies for subtraction during our two weeks spent on this.  Here are some of the students working hard during Maths time:
