Middle School

From the Acting Head of Middle School

It is my first week as Acting Head of Middle School, and I am lucky enough to be here for the start of Clubs. Clubs in the Middle School is part of our Values and Christian Service (VACS) program. Each group has been prepared by a teacher, and this term we are lucky enough to have Year Eleven helpers, solidifying their roles as Peer Support leaders and mentors. This term we are offering:

  • Craft
  • A Minute at GSG: Filmmaking
  • AFL
  • Cattle Club
  • Code and Build
  • Dance
  • Fishing
  • Girls Soccer
  • Macrame
  • Rowing
  • Service Learning
  • Skate and Cycle
  • UWA Science Extension

Students are encouraged to try something new and make the most of the experiences on offer. Through them they will learn traits such as persistence and teamwork, as well as have fun. We look forward to sharing or Clubs adventures with the GSG community throughout the term.

Year Seven to Eight GSSSSA AFL Carnival

On Thursday 26 May about 40 very excited Year Seven to Eight students headed off to Centennial Oval to participate in the GSSSSA AFL Carnival. The students quickly put on their footy jumpers, proudly donning the GSG strip.

The girls side was very excited and for most it was the first game of footy they’d ever played. The skills improved markedly throughout the day and when they were able to kick some goals the team got very excited. They notched up a nice win over ASHS and had a close loss against NASHS before Denmark got the better of them. It was great to see all the girls show lots of improvement and really enjoy their time playing footy. They particularly enjoyed the physicality of the day with many highlights being the tackles they laid.

The boys put their weekend team rivalries aside to come together as a GSG side. They won a hard-fought and low scoring match against Denmark to get things underway before being out-bodied in the first half against St Joseph's. Some positional changes evened things up in the second half and they fought back well, eventually only going down by a goal. Convincing wins against Bethel and NASHS followed and in the finals round, they beat Denmark again to finish 3rd on the day. Some great footy was played by the boys. Most pleasing was ability to adapt to positional and game plan changes throughout the day.

Well done to all involved. AFL at GSG is in strong hands moving forward if the attitudes yesterday were anything to go by.

A huge shout out to Kaleb Germain, Riley Hitsert and Aiden Clark for umpiring our games throughout the day. The boys showed responsibility and maturity beyond their years and were a good influence on their younger peers throughout the day.
