Week 1-9

Students will engage with personal narrative texts (Recounts). 

Students will be able to use features of fiction to summarise and analyse texts and use their personal experiences to make connections. They will begin to identify how a personal narrative follows a chronological sequence and has true information about the author. Students will be able to use events and characters in their retell of a text.

UNIT OF STUDY – Reading personal narratives  

Students will develop an understanding of personal narratives and how they are a description of an event, experience or memory in the author’s life. While reading personal narratives, students will be able to summarise important information to understand the meaning of the text. They will recognise and follow the events in the personal narrative, making connections based on personal experiences.

UNIT OF STUDY – Writing personal narratives  

As a result of this unit of study, students will understand that sometimes writer’s write about themselves. They will use mentor texts to assist them to write about a memory that is significant to them. They will provide details that make their narrative interesting and support their story with photos and illustrations.

 

Students will be able to write in past tense when crafting a personal narrative.

 

Students will be able to write simple and compound sentences.

Represent and solve simple addition and subtraction problems using a range of strategies including counting on, partitioning and rearranging parts

In this unit students will explore the history of local community services including the local fire brigade, police, SES and health care workers and ways these services have changed over time.

UNIT OF STUDY – Narrative (historical fiction)

Students will deepen their comprehension skills through analysing and critiquing narrative texts. They will ask questions about important parts of the text and make inferences using knowledge from the text and characters about the author's values, beliefs and bias. They will expand on their understanding by making predictions about events and actions.

UNIT OF STUDY – Narrative (historical fiction)

Students will understand that a historical narrative is built around writing a series of short term events in history in story form. They will craft pieces that include significant events sequenced in order using mentor texts to guide their writing. Students will publish their narrative in an interesting way to capture the attention of their chosen audience. 

 

Students will craft their historical narrative in chronological order expanding on the series of important events.

Place Value, Addition and Subtraction

Recognise and explain the connection between addition and subtraction.

Solve problems by using number sentences for addition or subtraction

 

Numeracy Week 5-9

Solve simple addition and subtraction problems using a range of efficient mental and written strategies

 

Apply place value to partition, rearrange and regroup numbers to at least tens of thousands to assist calculations and solve problems

Students will understand the purpose of telling stories is to entertain and that these stories can stir emotion. They will use the appropriate comprehension strategies to understand fiction text and share their thoughts with their peers.

Students will be able to craft texts that are written to entertain. Students will know that these texts are imaginative and creative and provoke an emotional response through the development of character, setting and plot. They will be able to produce text that is supported by illustrations that add meaning to their purpose.

In this unit students will explore Australia’s history and development from convict settlement, colonisation and migration by investigating significant individuals or groups from these times.

 

 Fitzroy Primary Specialists Program Outlines Term 2

 

PERFORMING ARTS- Bryce

This term in performing arts, Foundation students will focus on keeping a steady beat, using percussion instruments accurately and singing the notes so, mi and la. Year 1-3 students will be learning some music theory including how to read, write, transcribe, and perform rhythms made from crotchets (ta), quavers (titi) and rests (sa). They will also learn to strum and sing along to songs with C and F Major chords on a ukulele.Year 4-6 students will learn a variety of short children's songs from around the world in other languages as well as contemporary pieces, which they will learn to strum and singalong to with a ukulele. All students will participate in a variety of music games to strengthen their understanding of the elements of music. 

 

ART – Leah

In term 2, Year F-6 will be integrating the school-wide Inquiry focus of history into their artwork. They will be learning about different artists who use elements of local and Indigenous history in their art and creating a variety of artworks using different mediums. They will be learning, practicing, and building on their knowledge of the elements of art and using this knowledge to get ready for the art show which will be taking place later on in the year.     

 

PHYSICAL EDUCATION – Kerryn

 

Term 2 is going to be an exciting time for the Physical Education program. We have coaches from Collingwood AllStars Basketball coming each Wednesday and Thursday to conduct basketball lessons for our students. With these weekly sessions there will be a range of skills developed with the opportunity to have a round robin basketball tournament in the final weeks of the term. The school has also purchased brand new basketballs in different sizes and colours to cater for our Foundation to Year 6 students. We also run a basketball match each Thursday lunchtime for all year levels to get involved in

 

STEM - Vicki and Robbie 

In Term 2, Year F-6 will be focussing on ‘Materials, Matter and Change’ as part of their learning in Chemical Science. Foundation, Year 1 and 2 are learning about materials, change and mixtures and Years 3-6 are learning about matter, reactions, and change. Year 3s and 4s will be continuing to develop their work on the Urban Microbat Project through selecting suitable materials to build bat boxes

 

KITCHEN GARDEN -  Vicki and Robbie 

 

All classes will have two four-week blocks of Kitchen Garden throughout the year.

In Term 2, Years 1/2 JL and JL and Foundation will be attending Kitchen Garden classes. 

 

1/2 J & 1/2 L

Year 1/2 JL and 1/ 2 L will explore and taste different types of honey, learn about urban bee keeping and the history of honey as a food source for Aboriginal Peoples and other cultures. Students will create food with honey as the key ingredient. They will explore how bees are crucial to global food supply. They will conduct pollinator audits in the food garden and plant to attract insects which pollinate. 

 

FOUNDATION FR & FL

Foundation R and L will be exploring bread and bread making. They will learn about yeast as a raising agent and make different types of breads from different cultures. Students will explore bread ingredients, where they come from and learn how to add flavour to bread using herbs from the food garden. The school will connect with the High-Rise Community Bakery and other local bakeries to learn about bread making.
