Year 10 ID gets political

In a world where the community is concerned about young people lacking connection with our political system, Year 10 Students at Rosehill Secondary College are nearing the end of their 9 week Civics and Citizenship course.   This initiative aims to foster active and informed citizens, who are empowered to have their voices heard.

After addressing the importance of democracy, students have learnt about how laws are made, as well as the role of political parties and the media in addressing current issues.  Victoria Legal Aid visited the College, highlighted some of the laws particularly relevant for young people and explained how students seek help with legal issues.

On Wednesday 11th March, we were fortunate to have Ben Carroll MP, State Member for Niddrie, and Cr Samantha Byrne, Mayor of the City of Moonee Valley as guests at Rosehill Secondary College.  Our representatives spoke about their own journeys, motivations and priorities, their responsibilities and challenges, as well as the most effective way for our students to be advocates for change at a local and state level.   The insightful questions posed by our students demonstrated the level of understanding they have into the complexities of governing a diverse community of people.  With this growing civic knowledge, students are now preparing for an authentic campaigning and voting experience.
