NEW - Ashe Fest

Last week a number of students attended Ashefest at the Rumblara footy ground.  All our students had a wonderful day taking part in a variety of indigenous games and activities and arrived back at school with indigenous face art, a bag of goodies and  to reflect their day.

Thank you to Miss Drummond for organising this.

NEW - 'Rhyme Time' - Prep Excursion

Last week our Prep students visited the Mooroopna Library and were treated to an extremely entertaining afternoon with Caroline for a 'Rhyme Time' session. The students learnt about rhyme through song, nursery rhymes and through play. The children had a wonderful day.

5/6 Present Story Time

The grade 5/6 students have worked hard on writing and illustrating a story book that they then presented to the Grades Prep / 1 /2 students. The grade 6 students shared the work they have done with their Prep buddies, and the grade 5's read their stories to the 1/2 students.  Everyone had fun reading or listening.

New - Chatter Matters

9. Pragmatics and Social skills

Focus: Describe ways of making and keeping friends, including how actions and words can help or hurt others.

Check out the following youtube clip with your child.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLm2BuW73m4

Follow the guided questions. Discuss whether there are times when this has happened to them, how did they feel/ how did their friends respond? What could they do so they are more respectful next time?

The movie “Inside Out” is an excellent one to watch with your child. It looks closely at emotions and what we might need to do to get along with others. It’s great social skills movie to review with your child.

10. Pragmatics and Social skills

Focus: Identifying strengths and skills in others, acknowledging and giving praise.

Go through your child’s school photo ask them to name each child and say something positive about each child. It could be about their hobbies, personality, looks, family or something they’ve done.

With your child write 10 different ways of praising someone on a poster or a set of cards.

For example: Hey that was great! I really liked the way you…. You’re really good at that! Good job, well done, super mate etc

Practise saying these phrases so they are genuine and discuss when you might use them at home and at school.

Ask your child to use a different form of praise from the poster to a different person everyday. When they get home from school ask them to report on their use of praise and what sort of response they got from the other person.

Don’t forget to reward them daily (verbally) or at the end of each week (with a favourite activity) for regularly praising and considering others feelings.
