Parish Bulletin

St Mary’s Parish Prayer

God our Father, as we thank you for the blessings, we ask you to bless this Parish of yours, so that

we may love you more.

Encircle our families with your loving care.

Help parents to be good examples to their

children and our youth to grow in strength as good Christians.

To the sick grant health, to the aged bring serenity and to those in sorrow, joy.

May we grow stronger in faith and may

our love for one another become deeper

in our daily living.

We make this through the intercession of our Mother Mary.  Amen

A shepherd tells his dog to go count the sheep. So the dog goes out, comes back a little later and tells the shepherd: “You have 100”. Shepherd says: “That’s not right, I only got 98!” The dog replies: “Yeah but I rounded them up .”

Almighty God, our creator and guide, may we serve you with all our hearts and know your forgiveness in our lives. Amen.

Updated - Looking at the Readings

The God who spoke to Moses is pained by the depravity of the people yet moved to show them mercy. Who could ever have imagined such a God? The God depicted in the gospel actually searches for what is lost. He seems to abandon the safe ones for the sake of the one who has strayed. She goes to great lengths to find one coin. As a spurned yet loving father, God patiently waits until we come to our senses. Who could ever have conceived of such a God?

Our God seems consumed with an insatiable desire to re-establish a relationship with us after we have turned our backs on God, have chosen to commit our loyalties elsewhere, have thoughtlessly wandered off into danger that threatens our well being, not God’s. What is it about us that makes us so desirable? The answer has less to do with us than with the magnanimous character of God. It is almost as if unconditional love is not simply a characteristic of God, but God’s very essence and no human frailty or depravity can change this.

Paul insists that it is through Christ that all of this is accomplished. It is through the sacrifice of Christ that the depraved are forgiven, that sinners are saved, that the lost are found. It is through Christ that we are sought by God, and Christ is the very gift of mercy, the forgiveness of our sins, the celebration of our return. © Dianne Bergant CSA

NEW - Twenty Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The advent of satellite navigation and internet mapping has improved the chances of us getting where we want to go when we travel, but even with modern technology we sometimes find ourselves taking a wrong turn and becoming hopelessly lost. How marvellous it is then when we are  guided back to the right path and return home to those who lovingly await us. And how joyous it is when God welcomes us home.

In this week's Gospel, the parables as told by Jesus show, as Fr Brendan Byrne SJ in his homily notes says, that the chief issue at stake is not so much sin and its forgiveness but the loss and recovery of human beings. '[The parables] are rightly described as the “Parables of the Lost” because in each case the focus falls on a person who loses something precious and responds in a way that is at once foolish and extravagant.'

As we reflect on the scriptures, 'let us ask God to help us become ever more deeply aware of his love and compassion for us, and his desire to forgive the penitent sinner. Wherever and whatever our circumstances, God will always seek us out.'

This week let us remember those young people and their families who get lost in despair. Let us work to address the social difficulties they face in their homes and communities.

NEW - Season of Creation

From Sept 1 to Oct 4, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, Catholics will join major Christian  denominations to celebrate the Season of   Creation—with prayer and action to protect creation.

It is a unique time to reflect on and strengthen our role as stewards of God’s creation,       ‘pour common home.’
