Painting with Scissors

Year 8 Art

The later part of Henri Matisse’s life relates to the isolation that we find ourselves in during this Covid time. Henri Matisse was wheelchair-bound and unable to fully take care of himself, but he began to experiment with collage and paper cut-outs as a way of continuing to make art. Sometimes his cuts-outs looked like nature or people and sometimes abstract.

His bold, simple shapes became iconic of his style, and his collages remain some of his best-loved work.

Using Henri Matisse as inspiration to learn about modern art and to experiment, the Year 8 Art class searched around there homes for materials and took to heart the following quote:

Don’t wait for inspiration. It comes while one is working. ― Henri Matisse
