Stage 4

The past two weeks has seen the commencement of learning from home for our Stage 4 students. We know that it has been challenging for some families who are sharing computers and resources, coordinating different schedules, and dealing with the uncertainty of COVID. Despite these challenges we have seen so many of our Stage 4 students step up and actively engage in their learning while at home. We are very proud of all our students!

We would like to acknowledge a number of students who have consistently demonstrated grit and determination during the past two weeks. These students have been awarded “Lockdown Legends” commendations for Weeks 5 and 6:

Year 7
Marlene Ruhnke, Kelvin Opoku Okai, Alannah Blanch, Abigail Chalmers, Rachel Gooley, Emelia Kelly, Alma Kanety.
Year 8
Katherine Squires-Morgan, Lincoln Turnell, Cooper Packham, Sophia Finley, Keziah Haqq, Chloe Betts, Nathan Smith, Jessica Perry.

Congratulations to all these students!

Please remember to contact the school if you have any concerns regarding the educational or wellbeing needs of your child.

Looking forward to seeing all our students in the classroom again, but until then see you in all in Zoom meetings and in our Google classrooms.

Learning science from home: creating critters!

Science is one of those subjects that is best learned by doing things. During lockdown and working from home, it can be difficult to create engaging science activities when we so often require specialised equipment or materials that most students do not have available.

Our Year 7s have been working on a Biology topic, Classification. They explore the ways that scientists group living things based on their structures and adaptations. This week, students were given a task to research some interesting adaptations plants have that allow them to survive in the harsh Australian environments - alpine, desert, rainforest or woodland – and research the survival challenges faced by plants. Students were then asked to tap into their creativity and come up with a totally new species of plant adapted to that environment (...new to science) and make or draw a model of their unique plants!

It was amazing to see all the incredible creations that came out of this activity; students all seemed to enjoy themselves and have shown they have an excellent understanding of how adaptations can help organisms survive and thrive when exposed to the elements!

Year 8 daily challenges

Student wellbeing is important, especially during lockdown. The Year 8 Wellbeing Team have been in constant contact with students, making sure that they are okay and looking after themselves.

One way we are doing this is by having daily challenges. These have included a biscuit-making challenge, having Zoom meetings where students and teachers introduce their pets to one another, and a challenge to make a bow tie.

Bow-tie challenge - Georgie Harper
Bow-tie challenge - Mrs Rottcher
Bow-tie challenge - Mia Drozdowski
Biscuit challenge - Katherine Squires-Morgan: Korean mochi
Biscuit challenge - Madison Collins: chocolate vanilla creams
Biscuit challenge - Matilda Reynolds: Anzacs

It is important to maintain regular contact with friends, family, students, and teachers. After all, we are here to support one another.

Year 7 Aboriginal Dance Group

Our Year 7 Aboriginal Dance Group were out-and-about (pre-lockdown) performing at Newling Public School for NAIDOC Week and at ASC's Education Week Assembly.

They brilliantly performed a dance which they had workshopped with the Bangarra Dance Theatre during Terms 1 and 2.  It represented the journeys of each of their choreographers (Wulli Wulli, Mibun, Guya and Samu) and was performed to the soundtrack Poison, along with two interlocking sections by our own ASC dancers.

The Year 7 Aboriginal Dance Group is looking forward to visiting the choreographers when allowed, which has been organised by our Principal, Ms Harvey-Bice.
