Year 8

Year 8 students are settling into the term well. Students are improving in their abilities to organise themselves effectively for classes.

On the whole, uniform expectations have been upheld. A reminder to parents/carers that sports uniform should only be worn on days that the students have Physical Education or Dance classes. The girls know the rules about uniform, jewellery and makeup; breaches of the rules will earn a uniform infringement. In cases where a student has received three infringements, a letter will be sent home outlining the date of the detention.

Further to this, a reminder that students need to fill out an official request form for late submission of required assessment tasks TWO days before the submission date. Please make it a habit to check and sign your daughter’s planner every fortnight, to ensure that she is recording her homework tasks and reminders daily. This helps to encourage organisational skills and to establish positive habits. It is not recommended that students take holidays during school term. Important sequential learning in the classroom can be missed. If unavoidable, and students miss classes during term time due to holidays, it is their responsibility to catch up.

During Pastoral, students have been finishing there 'Cloth of Dreams' ready to be sent to the fire affected schools. Year 8 students were asked to consider the devastation of the recent bush fires and in particular focus on how the young children in fire affected communities may have felt and the loss they may have encountered. Each Homeroom has been allocated a fire affected school and asked to recreate a 'Cloth of Dreams' for the young children. Each cloth was adorned with drawings of favorite items young children will treasure. The 'Cloth of Dreams' will be sent to the fire affected schools along with pictures and a messages (see below) in the hope that it will bring some color and happiness to the lives of these children as they rebuild their communities.

We were deeply saddened to hear about the fires that have destroyed homes, livelihoods and wildlife across much of Australia during the New Year period.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all the people and communities who are affected by this devastating event, in particular your school community, as you continue to rebuild.

We send our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who have tragically lost their lives, and admire the brave firefighters who risked their own lives to save the lives of others.

During our introductory day early in the year, Kilbreda Year 8 students were asked to consider the devastation of the bush fires and, in particular, focus on how the young children in fire affected communities may have felt and the loss they may have encountered. Each Homeroom was asked to create a “cloth of dreams” for young children from fire affected school communities. Each cloth was adorned with drawings of favorite items that young children will treasure.

Our hope is that these cloths will bring some color and happiness to the lives of your students as you rebuild your communities.

Kind regards

The leaders attended a full day training program facilitated by yLead.

The House Swimming Carnival took place on Friday 29 February and was a wonderful opportunity to participate, either by competing in a swimming or novelty event, and/or by supporting house teams. It was lovely to see students cheering for each other and getting into the spirit of the day. I was so impressed to see Year 8 students participating with such enthusiasm. It is days like these where true leadership can be shown, by supporting fellow students and participating in school spirit.

The Year 8 'Foreshore Program' is again running this year, where students can show leadership and stewardship by applying to be involved in caring for our environment at Mentone Foreshore. I encourage all interested students to apply. Giving creates self-esteem and an opportunity to stand up and show care for our environment.
