Wellbeing

Student Leaders

Kilbreda College has introduced a new leadership structure for 2020 to increase student voice, collaboration and unity amongst year levels. We introduced five new student teams under the headings of:

  • Living Justice
  • Community Action
  • Sustainability
  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Student Representative Council (SRC)

Each group has two student representatives from each year level who were elected by their peers with a teacher mentor and they will be meeting regularly to help plan and organise events and activities throughout the year.

On Monday 24 February we invited yLead to facilitate the Student Leaders Training Day with a hands-on leadership and development experience that combined team building with essential skill development for leadership groups.

Students  worked together in a range of practical challenges, developing a greater understanding of each other and creating a shared vision for the year ahead.

Peer Support Continues

Peer Support continued this week between Year 7 and Peer Support Leaders from Year 10 and 11.  In the coming weeks the groups will continue to focus on building friendships, learning about life at the College, prepare for Camp at Lord Somers and continuing to navigate around the school.

The Peer Support program empowers young people to support each other in the transition process into a new large school environment.

Australian Air Force Cadets

Year 12 Student, Katie Walker is promoting the opportunity for students between the ages of 12-18 years in the local area to join the Australian Air Force Cadets (AFFC). Katie states that the AAFC “fosters qualities in particular, self-discipline, confidence, self-reliance, leadership, teamwork, respect, honour and integrity. Personally, my favourite part of Cadets is the network you create across Australia, you make many friends and meet countless amounts of people, these unique bonds you create will turn out to be lifelong friendships."

Already three other Kilbreda students, Louise Walker, Bliss Pengilly (both Year 10) and Ellie Andronis (Year 11) are members of the AAFC and would also love other Kilbreda students to join them.

Flight Sergeant, Katie Walker is also a SES volunteer in the Chelsea Unit. She first started her volunteering to meet the service component of the Duke of Edinburgh Award in Year 9. Her volunteer work includes fundraising for charities, clearing trees over roads and train tracks and helping the local community recover from storm damage.

“I do this volunteer work because I want to help people, give back to the community, gain new skills, meet new people, experience for a potential career down that sort of pathway (VicPol, AV). I also live by Matthew 6, a verse in the bible that I respect.”

“I think others should take up volunteering because it's a great way to spend your time. What's not to love about making someone smile at 3:00am because you've solved their flapping shed roof. Through volunteer work in the SES you gain so many new skills and obtain experience you cannot find elsewhere.”

Please contact Katie Walker at Katherynn.Walker@Kilbreda.vic.edu.au for further information about joining the Australian Air Force Cadets or volunteering for the SES.
