Digital Technologies

Digital Technologies

and STEM Report

This term has had a flying start in DigiTech! Year 7s have their new laptops and are learning all about the digital systems here at Kilbreda. They are also creating presentations on the best way to look after their laptops.

Year 8s are learning very useful skills using Microsoft Excel such as using formula, functions, formatting, graphing, sorting, filtering. The students in the Year 9 Emerging Technologies class are also fine tuning their Excel skills, creating trackers while researching new and emerging technologies in the world.

VCE Applied Computing is alive and well at the College and we are very proud to say that this year we have both Units 1 & 2 Applied Computing running at Year 11 and Units 3 & 4 Data Analytics running at Year 12. Good luck to all students doing VCE Computing this year!

Techbots, our DigiTech enrichment club, is up and running every Friday at lunchtime with wonderful new members at Year 7 and 8 and our much-respected senior members in attendance too. Any given Friday lunchtime you can find students working on a range of projects such as programming, robotics, animations and web design with HTML.

Last Wednesday six Year 7 and 8 students went to the University of Melbourne to take part in a Robogals Robotics Workshop and competition. The girls learnt all about the different types of engineering such as civil, mechanical and chemical. They then broke up into teams and completed a series of progressively more difficult challenges programming EV3 robots. It was a fabulous day and inspiring for our students to get the chance to meet and work with so many current female engineering students.

Learning Leader: Digital Technologies

STEM Leaders

Hi, this is Taylah and I’m a STEM Leader for Technology in 2020. As a Year 12 student, I am part of the Unit 3/4 Data Analytics class and we are the first class at Kilbreda College studying an Applied Computing subject in many years. There are 11 of us!

We learn the importance of data integrity by learning to use data programs such as Excel and Access to also create eye-catching data visualisations. In the coming months we will be learning about cyber security and digital systems for keeping data safe and secure.

My favourite part of our class is how close we all are. We all have a love for technology and work together to accomplish tasks while always having a good laugh, including Mrs Donoghue.

Every Friday at  lunch time, in our ever-improving STEM room, I attend the TechBots club. Techbots allows students from all year levels to experience new areas of technology they might not be aware of such as robotics and 'Python'. There is currently a group of girls undertaking a national programming competition in 'Python'. It is also a great opportunity for the girls to get help with the work from two of our Digital Technologies teachers Mrs Vella and Mrs Donoghue.
